Hygro questions

So I've been working on setting up my first little humidor, and I'm having doubts about my hygro. Though I bought the humi on clearance, the regular price for the whole set (humi, puck w/ florist foam sponge, and hygro) was $50 so I thought I'd be getting some halfway decent equipment. When I salt tested the hygro, it read @ 60% RH. Now, I was able to use a screwdriver through a hole in the middle of the back and adjust where the needle sat, but it felt really tight and no instructions came with the hygro about adjusting it. On the other hand, it now salt tests (did I just turn that into a verb?) at 73%, which I think is reasonable. The questions I'm left with are:

Should any hygro, no matter how cheapo it is, come from the factory 15 points off?

Should I worry that I may have broken it by "adjusting" a hygro that wasn't meant to be adjusted?

Should I just buckle, buy a new hygro, and not bother with this one anymore?

Also, I will post pictures of the back when I get home if that might help you guys with the adjustability question.

Re: Hygro questions

I have 2 digital (although cheap) hygros and they both read about 7% off. Ones high and ones low so I just average them to tell were I'm at. Trust your salt test results, the way it chemically works, it has to at 75%. Analog hygros are known to be notoriously inaccurate however, so you may just want to get a new one anyways.

Go to walmart--get a digital for $6 until you really want to invest in a higher $ digital; but most on here will tell you just stick with the $6-20 versions.

You spend a lot of money on stogies. Invest in beads and a digital read out. Treat your investment with care, your be happy at the end.

Re: Hygro questions

Analog hygros are crap! Go with a Western Caliber III digital. They are garanteed to be correct +/- 3%. I have four of them and they are read correctly. Or the adjustable hygro cigarmony.com offers.
