Salt Test Question

Ok i have already asked a few quetions and have broken in my humidor.
i have salt tested digital hygo #1, then used that meater to sync my anolog hygo in my humidor since it does not come out of the box

any how i have put the hygo #1 back where i took it from (baby room)

now i have gone out just for the heck of it and bought a digital wireless hygro
we will call this hygro #2 and am i have just salt tested this..

salt test
1. filled bottle cap up with table salt
2. put a few drops of water on salt (not to much)
3. put cap with table salt in zip lock bag with digital hygro #2
4. Let stand for 6 hours

Ok facts
1. hygro #1 was 8 degress off was stating 67
2 . hygro #2 was 8 degres off was stating 67

now my question is, is the just weird of did i do something wrong

standing temp is anywhere from 70-75

both hygros are made from diffrent companys
hyrgo #1 Radio Shack
hrygo #2 Oregon Scientific

i am plaing on going away for a week dont want to come back and have 48 bad cigars

any comments are welcome

Be sure the salt is thoroughly wetted, but not disolved -- you MAY not have enough water. What does the ambient RH read on the meters -- you MAY not have a tight enough seal. Double bagging may be required.

However, it may be that both were off by 8% too.

Good Luck.

Re: Salt Test Question

I would do the test for more than just six hours. I did mine for 24 and checked the hygro every 6 hours or so. Do a search, I'm sure you'll find plenty of tips. Good luck (and welcome to Club Stogie!).

What Roger said.

The salt needs to be a satuated salt solution, so as long as salt crystals remain dissolved at equilibrium, it will be saturated.

I test in a good tupperware and have about 50ml of saturated brine in a smaller tupper inside.

Temp is largely irrelevant as humidity is not affected by temp from 5-50C.

Re: Salt Test Question

You know you got the salt right when you can tip the cap upside down and neither salt nor water falls or drips down.

Re: Salt Test Question

Rumblepen, that is one great piece of advice. I've always wondered how much is enough and when i did the test myself i did it to just about the proportions you suggest. Great advice!

I too have done this test and often wondered "Hmmm, do I have the right mix?" Good tip and good thread. I am also going to check my hygrometers again and make sure that they are right. If hypothetically they are wrong by say a 5% low reading can I read the Hygrometer and add 5%? Is it that simple?

Thanks again
Ken

Across the range of RH and Temperature you are going to be measuring, yes it is that simple.

Good, Thanks for the response. There seems to be vast wealth of knowledge here. That's rare to find. Cheers.
