Replacing wick with beads in set and forget humidifier?

I received my Aristocrat cabinet about a month ago and i'm really pleased with. Bob is a hell of a craftsman and a great guy. The only thing about the cabinet that is causing me some worries is the humidifier. When i checked it yesterday there was some mold on the wick. I replaced the wick and cleaned out the humidifier with alcohol. What i was wondering is if anyone has removed the wick entirely and filled the humidifier with beads? I have a couple of pounds spread out in the cabinet already, but i was thinking maybe using only beads would make it more difficult for mold to grow. Has anyone tried this?

Re: Replacing wick with beads in set and forget humidifier?

Robson,

What i find in the Aristocrats is that it is important to not put too much water in the humidifier.. Not sure if your unit is cooled or not, but mine is.. So i know in the summer time, the cooler runs more frequently. thus more condensation is collected in the pan and drained into the humidifier to be used for humidity.. In the winter time, while i have my heat on, the cooler also runs, but this time it does not collect alot of condensation..

So, the cliff's notes version of my paragraph is... Put less water in the humidifer in the summer, then in the winter.. Dont think that overfilling the humidifer is helping the situation, b/c its not.

hope this helps.. pm me if u need further help

the beads will work, or a product called hydrosorb-it releases moisture but doesn't absorb it, cheaper than beads because they work differently-if you keep the humidifier stock, add a very tiny bit of everclear or isoproply alcohol to kill the mold problem-hope this helps

Order some Super Absorbant Polymers from here:

http://https://water-sorb.com/store.php?crn=207
https://water-sorb.com/store.php?crn=207

fill canister about 1/3 full and add water, I've replaced mine twice since 2003 and they work great. A big plus for me is no spilling of water if one of my little girls wants to help.

Another tip is to add a litlle everclear to prevent mold, I've not done this because the SAP's are cheap and can be replaced easily.
