Coolers with slots?

So I broke my rule and ordered about 20 cigars before I had my coolerador done, plus I have some trades coming in. Uh-oh.

So now it is urgent that I get a cooler (i have all the other accessories).

I really want one with slots on the inside so I can stand it up and put shelfs in it, like St. Lou Stu's. I have pretty much given up on finding one locally, I have been pretty much everywhere. The cooler selection around here in the winter is pretty lacking - go figure. So I guess I am going to buy a cooler over the internet...

Can anyone with a cooler that has slots chime in here?

Re: Coolers with slots?

I have a 150 qt Igloo with slots however I don't use any shelves. I just put boxes in the cooler, add 65% beads, a few oust fans and everything is good to go

You can use tuperware til your cooler comes in. I have not seen anyone with a cooler with shelves, seems unnecesary, cigar boxes stack on themselves.

Re: Coolers with slots?

I might have to use tupperware for a while. I want to get the right cooler, not settle for something I don't want.

I would like to have the shelfs for better organization, so i am going to hold out.

Re: Coolers with slots?

Go to a marina place. They have all white igloo marine coolers with slots. I have a few.

Re: Coolers with slots?

Well due to bombs and my devil site indiscretion I went for a cooler in stock at a local target. I figure I can use this one until I find the kind I am looking for and this one will go to beer duty (beer seems a lot less picky than cigars).

I am using cigar boxes for storage so I am not going to attach cedar to the sides or anything. I have 1 pound of beads in three pantyhose "bags" and two oust fans. I gave the boxes a quick spray with distilled water.

How long should I wait to make sure the RH is solid before letting the sticks move in? In just a few minutes it went from 50% to 61%. The beads are 65%.

No need to season a cooler. Wait til the boxes dry a bit before putting sticks in them. You can put your other boxes or bags in now. Just open the top of the bags. Once you start filling the cooler you can remove one or both ot the oust fans and move them to your Vinotemp.

Thanks Bob. They look happy in their new home.

God, no refrigerators please - I won't do it. My credit card can't take it! It is time to concentrate on smoking what I have.

Re: Coolers with slots?

All day yesterday everything was fine in the cooler. Sitting right around 64%-66%. I was opening and closing it a lot.

Overnight the RH got up to 76%.

All these are readings on my calibrated digital hydro.

I was under the impression these beads wouldn't raise the RH higher than the % that they were even if I were to put 10 pounds in there. So I took the bead bags out and gave them a quick shake over the sink. A couple drops came out but not a whole lot of water.

The oust fans are running properly and the hyrdo is definitely not broken, I left it out of the cooler and it dropped right down in to the high 50's.

Any ideas?

Open the drain plug?

The one pound of beads are currently in 3 bags made of off-white sheer pantyhose. Should I make like 6 bags and spread them out more?

Re: Coolers with slots?

There is too much h2o in the cooler, I suspect you made the boxes too wet... Leave it open for a few hours to dry up a bit...

Re: Coolers with slots?

Thanks.

I was thinking that, so I checked all the boxes and they seem pretty dry. I took out all the beads (and stuck them in my empty desktop humi) and I will see what happens in the next hour or so then I will put them back in.

I was also thinking, all the cigars are in boxes (and 90% are in cello too) so they probably aren't getting all that humidity, that is just the RH inside the cooler. It is most likely not that humid inside the cedar boxes.

I will get this right!

Re: Coolers with slots?

After screwing around all day I think I figured out the problem.

The beads (or mostly the stockings holding them) were too wet. I took them all out and gave them a brisk shake over the sink and drops of water did come out. This was a few hours ago and ever since I have been checking each hour and they are holding solid at 66%.

We will see in the morning if that really was the fix.

The beads are too wet. If all the beads are clear(wet) then there is no way for them to absorb the excess humidity in the cooler. It might be easier for you to only wet 2 of the stockings and leave 1 stocking dry. Then you would always have some dry beads to absorb the excess humidity. There should never be water dripping out of the beads. I have found it to be easier to wet the beads with a pump sprayer that I picked up at Walmart for $.99, then pat the stockings dry with a towel before putting them back in the cooler
