making your own travel Humidor

Anybody ever just make their own travel humidor? I've looked at alot of the pictures of the factory humidors. I'm thinking about maybe trying it. Buying an Aluminum case (like Wal-Mart has sometimes) or a handgun case with the cut-your-own foam. Just cutting the foam out the right size for cigars and rig myself up a humidifier and put a cheap Hygrometer in there like I use in my Coolerdor. I'll probably scout out some materials this weekend and post pictures if I decide to do it as a project. Any thoughts?

Its a neat idea but if you can get an otterbox cigar caddy for under $20 why spend the time? 2, 5, 10, or 15 count.

You could get a nice Pelican case in the color and size of your choice, too.

Then use some beads in tubes for humidification. Perhaps stick a digital hygrometer in it if you are anal. It would be best to use open cell foam so the humidity can distribute evenly.

Depending on where you're traveling to and from and how long you could just use a gladware container.

You could also stick a Boveda pack of your choice, 65 or 69RH in the travel. Mine are within 1% of my digital hygrometer reading. They last up to 3 months and you wouldn't have to worry about taking a hygrometer! For $4 a pack, it's a no-brainer, especially for travel!

I wouldn't use a handgun case. Say for some reason you walk into a bank, oh, to bomb an old teller friend, next thing you know, you're sitting in jail while the bomb squad burns your sticks. Dramatic, but you'll get a lot of looks using a handgun case.

Re: making your own travel Humidor

I use my cigar caddie a lot, holds about 15 cigars. I think you can find them for 20-30 dollars with the foam inserts for cigars. I've seen them at the local Tinderbox.

I wouldnt worry about a hygrometer or a humidifier of any sort. You cigars should be fine for several days. I fill mine up and drag it around all weekend no hygro or humidifier, what I dont smoke I toss back in my humidor, no problems.

Well, I went to Wal-Mart and found this. I think it'll work out fine. I could probably get 15 in there depending on size. It has soft but tight straps, so I have to be careful when putting them in there so they don't rub the wrapper. Probably will only use this with cigars in the cellophane. I just put a few naked ones in there for the picture. I think it'll work out nice though. $9 total

Very nice, I like my cigar caddy but if that works, use it. Is it airtight?

Re: making your own travel Humidor

I wouldn't think it's 100% air tight, but it closes pretty tightly. Has a lock on it with keys. This would only be used for an overnite trip with work or something. They wouldn't be in there anymore than 48 hours at the max at anytime. I've been looking at the Cigar Caddy, and I'll probably buy myself a 15ct before long for vacation trips that will be a few days or more.

Re: making your own travel Humidor

I have a cedar lined travel humidor that holds 24 cigars with the foam pads inside and 40 without the foam. It is far from being airtight, but I watch it daily and it does really well, in fact it holds all my favorite cigars. When I do travel, I just use a cigar box I pick up from a B&M for free, I add a stronger latch and hinges, ready to go. The Ashton VSG boxes are fairly airtight with proper hinges and latch.

The Arturo Fuente Don Carlos is waterproof box but you need to add a few strips of cedar to the box to ,ake a ledge that can create an airtight seal. If you want a large box that can hold 50+ cigars, JFR is the box to use, but another you need to add extra work to if you want it airtight.
