Cheap Torch lighter question

I read that a few people bought the cheapo Ronson torch lighters from Wal-Mart and just put high quality fuel in them and they work perfectly fine. I'm using one that I put some "decent" fuel in, called First Light in a big yellow can. Says triple refined on it. Anyway, the torch flame only gets about a 1/4 high with the flame adjust turned all the way to high. I als some a cob pipe a little on the side, sometimes when I go to use the torch on that, when I turn the torch upside down while lit, the flame will "sputter" a bit and sometimes even go out. Whats up with that? Anyway, my torch is primarily used for cigar lighting, but shouldn't the flame be a bit higher when turned on high, and is it normal for torches to go out when turned upside down? I actually have a few different cheaper torch lighters that usually go out after a few seconds upside down.

Re: Cheap Torch lighter question

I would try either Lava or Vector fuel...Triple refined fuels don't work well in torches in my experience. Nice thing about the Ronsons, for a couple bucks it ain't that big a deal to pitch 'em when they fail.

Where can I find those? Most B&M's around here don't carry much in the way of butane besides the cheap stuff. I have probably just have to order them online.

My ronson's do that upside down thing too; they're actually pretty good for lighting a pipe; but I've found my pipe lighter--another butane Ronson, but normal flame; found it at the smoker friendly the other day (not the windproof one, but it's like a little round tube, kinda funny lookin--kinda like Icehog ).

Re: Cheap Torch lighter question

Since the torch doesn't want to work upside down much, I usually just use a regular flame lighter and draw firmly to suck them flame down into the bowl to light it up. Works everytime and the flame doesn't touch the rim.

The problem with using a jet while holding it upside down is that the feed tube gets its fuel from the bottom. You need to turn it back upright for a few seconds to get fuel back in the tube. Vector fuel can also be found at Williams-Sonoma.
Another great alternative to the Ronson is this lighter.

I have given away 12-13 of these lighters and everyone loves them. Order 3 and they are under $2/each delivered! I just ordered 10 more last night.
They also have a nice knockoff of the Blazer 207, but I havent tried that one yet.

Re: Cheap Torch lighter question

Pretty nice little firebreather for the price. I'd like to have one like that. One of the better things abou the Ronson lighter I like over my other cheap "gas station" lighters, is the flame adjust screw. The Ronson has a durable one that easily accepts any flat head. The others have this sorry ass brass cup with notches. I've already half way broken one of those with a flat head just trying to get the thing to turn either way. Looks like the type screw the one you showed me has on the bottom of it.

It adjusts at the bottom, but I dont mess with the flame much. The biggest advantage over the Ronson is that they hold a ton more fuel and you can see when you are running low. Plus they save you that trip to WM standing in a long fokking line to buy one or two lighters.

I don't mess with the flame much either, just when I was refilling it after purging the crap fuel out of it. About the line at Wal-Mart, when I was there I went ahead and bought 5 of the lighters. Haven't even take 4 out of the pack yet. Got them just incase I lose my first one.

I like my Ronsons as well! I think that fuel is the key with either one.

I have a Ronson lighter and like it a lot. What would be the difference between the Ronsen fuel and the Vector fuel?

Make sure that you purge the lighter prior to filling it... (press the fill valve until nothing somes out and repeat a few times)
