Question about "sealing"-

Hi All-

Let's say I buy an "antique" chest(not having any "red" cedar in it)...

What would be the best sealant for all the "edges"?

smokeyscotch gave me this idea... Here is his thread...

http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=135026

The lid "sealer" is a different question altogether(once you know what you have to work with) ...it would then have to be lined with spanish cedar!

Silicon...latex...?? Something that would have absolutely no "chemical" odors or chemical "seepage" into my "loved ones" after curing!

I'm probably going to research the "heck out it", but I just thought I'd throw this "idea" out there....I could of searched...but I thought smokeyscotch's idea was great....and I'm trying to "think" ahead....lol! I'm also into the "Old Stuff"!

T kindly IA to all who reply!

Re: Question about "sealing"-

You can use a silicone. I sealed a 50ct. humi with Silicone II Sealant with mildew resistance. I let it dry and air out a solid week and there was no smell left, but sweet spanish cedar.

You could also use Aquarium sealant. I'm sure that would work great too.

Re: Question about "sealing"-

Iv'e thought about silicone too. I would definitley let it air out really good, as the stuff releases an odor like acetic acid (vinegar smell) as it cures.

Thanks!......I've been doing a bit of research on silicones....I don't want to scare anyone...but make sure the "Mildew Resistance" silicones don't contain arsenic!!! Yikes!

It looks as if aquarium sealers would be the safest bet...short of paraffin wax...lol...I may try the wax(although not on a huge project)...One can buy it easily at their grocery store...It's called Gulf Wax....It's what my mother used to use in canning...You can also find it at Ace Hardware....

Just cut a chunk of it off...put it in a glass bowl and take a hair dryer to it to make it workable...I'm not so sure how well it would adhere to wood or plastic(coolidors)...but it might be a good alternative to sealing up those hygrometers? Probably...easier to take out and re-calibrate too!

Another note about the silicones....Make sure you wipe it down good after it cures!!!...Helps get rid of any residual residue....Say that fast 10 times....
