Re: Hygrometer

I can't say I've used that one before, but looking at the product description it states a +/- 5% variance on RH and you can't adjust it. Wouldn't you rather spend a couple dollars more for this one and have pinpoint accuracy after calibration:

Good day!

I can't attest to that particular hygrometer...but it looks like a "timer" that I have on my fridge.(not neccessarily a "good thing" )

There are some different styles here as well. Adjustable is the way to go...IMHO.

No you calibrate it using the salt test. Then, you use the nob to adjust the reading to the proper RH. From then on it reads accurately. There is also a square model with a larger display if you check out the link to Heartfelt Industries in the above post.

Make sure you buy the Boveda calibration kit that you can purchase at a discount from www.heartfeltindustries.com It's much easier and more accurate than the salt test you devise yourself! Also, I like the round digital "Hygroset II" hygrometers better. They're more compact. I have 7 of them and they all work great!!!

I second that, I had a cheaper one that was off by 16... now I gout two of these and when I used the Boveda bag and claibrated them... dead on now.

Heartfelt is a great place to buy them. I bought one round one from c-bid a while back, but I just ordered another round one and a square one from Heartfelt.

Re: Hygrometer

After having some run ins with innacurate hygros I broke down and bought an adjustable digi and calibration pack from Heartfelt. Just calibrated it and am waiting to see how accurate it is.

I tried the homemade salt test and questioned the results. With the Boveda calibration kit you are working with "knowns" to base your readings off of.

You can get one like that (it may be the same one) at Wal Mart for 6 bucks.

Well you either run it through the salt test or you use a Boveda calibration kit. Both of these methods establish an environment with a certain RH. You leave the hygrometer in this environment and if it doesn't read what it's supposed to then you know how much it is off.

For instance, with the salt test IIRC you get an environment of 75% RH. If the hygro reads 70% then you know it's -5% off.

Re: Hygrometer

I would agree that the unit you have posted about is not a great choice. As others have said, being able to calibrate the unit based on the Salt or Boveda test is very important.
I have 3 different units that are only a few dollars more than the unit you asked about, and you can include a Boveda Calibration Pak with any of them for $2.

Re: Hygrometer

Don't buy that thing at all! The variance on it is +/-5. That does NOT mean that it'll come within +/- 5 and then once you calibrate it it'll be dead on. It means that each and every reading is only accurate to within 5%. This makes it basically worthless for cigars, since its reading of 70 could be 65-75. If you just want to make sure your cigars don't dry out too much or explode, it'll probably work. But if you actually want any sort of fine-tuned control over your humidity, you will be sorely disappointed with that hygrometer.

With something like that, being able to calibrate it means exactly jack squat. Calibrating it won't matter, because it's not even capable of being accurate enough to be useful.
