It was kept in a cool room (basement) and against my expectations - no smell of amonia or musty smells when I opened it! I guess if the humidor is well designed, it would allow for a tiny amount of air circulation, and the PG (or the beads) will regulate the RH, so for 7 weeks I wouldn't worry much - maybe just miss them cigars!
I always wondered if someone had done that. Good to know my English BOTL.

Re: Unopened Humidor....Trouble?

Well luckily my trip has been shortened to about 4 weeks. I'm still having trouble picking up some spanish cedar for a coolador/tuppador. We have a Woodcraft in town, but every piece the have is weeping. The clerk was very apoligetic and kept saying that they shouldn't do that, but he can't tell me when they will have more in.

As far as missing the cigars, there is a cigar bar a few blocks up the street from the hotel I'll be staying in, so it won't be too bad.

Oh, and no basements in the Houston area. Just a house where you don't shut off the AC until winter....all three weeks of it.

Can you keep a constant temp, and a perfect seal if so should not be a problem, after all think of a tubed cigar.

Re: Unopened Humidor....Trouble?

Im with IHT on this one. As long as you dont have a history of massive swings of your humidity levels, you will be fine. In all honesty, the life they had between harvest and sitting in your humidor has been far worse than anything youll ever put them through.

You have to learn to trust your humidor. Maintain it and trust it. Treat it well, like a wife, only better and it will treat you well. After moving back home from Pittsburgh this August, I opened one of my humidors for the first time since April. 68% and heavenly in there. If its seasoned, has a decent seal, and you have beads (or especially an active system), I wouldnt worry.

Your only concern should be excessive heat. Keep it away from windows and in a cooler area of your house and youll be fine.

PM me your address. I should be able to send some out to you. Honestly, when you are using beads or an active system, I think the Sp cedar is more for the romance and the debatable flavor it imparts to your cigars. But, most importantly, if you like it, by all means use it....so Ill send some your way. (Imm assuming you just want some scraps to lay in there, as I dont have any stock that would be useful for lining an Edison-a-dor).

Hey Ken! I'm no English, just live here (and don't think ever will be - these guys are way too conservative and my accent would give me away!), just proud to be wearing the goodold stars & stripes! ,

And to make it related to the topic, after nearly a year, the cigars in cello (OpusX's) had the best overall condition (smoked without tunneling or getting a V-burn that happens to cigars that are not rotated in a humidor (specially the bottom row), but the helping point there was near constant TEMPERATURE in my basement which stops RH fluctuations and I can go on and on, but my kids are pressing on to go out!
over & out,,

I was thinking that it would help keep any plastic tastes or smells from getting on the smokes. Of course, I'm still new to most of this so I have a lot to learn.

I would not worry about mold as long as you keep the tuppador in a cool place (below 75 degrees and closer to say 72). The thing to worry about IMHO is the air getting stale.

Exactly, we just got down into the 80's recently here and I'm all "Oh god it feels so good!" The heat has gotten to our brains down here!
