Spanish Cedar Tray shortage

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I've searched the net and all suggested retailers and it would appear that you currently cannot find spanish cedar trays on sale ANYWHERE, they're on back order at every shop. I just bought a wine fridge so I wanted to get all my supplies lined up ahead of time, so yeah, anyone? any hidden spots I should be checking? Or should I skip on the shelves all together and line the walls with spanish cedar?

You'll probably have to make your shelves. The trays seem to be out everywhere. What I did for trays was use Oliva Tubo boxes for trays. I've read in another thread that Pepin Blue boxes and RP Olde World Reserve boxes work well too. I'm uploading a couple of photos of what I did. PM me if you have questions. Hope this helps.

Hey, is that a 28 bottle vinotemp? I was looking to order some of the cedar trays online when a store had them in stock, but I looked at the dimensions and they are 7.5" wide for a total of 15" for 2 wide, and my vinotemp is 14.5" wide inside, so I scratched that idea.

Yep, it's a 28 bottle Vinotemp. I never found a tray that would fit 2 to a shelf so I quit looking as well. After I had bought a box of Oliva Tubos to get the free sampler I noticed that the Tubo box seemed to be about half the width of my shelves. After looking closer and measuring, I ordered 10 boxes of them! I like the Oliva's anyway so it wasn't a big deal and getting free shipping and the free samplers kinda sweetened the deal.

So you did it the easy way! I have to do it the hard way, I have a cooler full of smokes, but they are poorly arranged due to too many different sized boxes, so I have to search for some of these empty

Oliva seems to make several different Tubos and the boxes might be close. If you make the rounds to some of your B&Ms, look for boxes that are 6 3/4" wide and no more than 11" deep. If you get Oliva boxes, you'll probably have to take the hardware (hinges) off the boxes. Hope this helps.

I called either bargainhumidors or cheaphumidors in January, I can't remember which one I called. They said there was a problem at the factory and that they wouldn't be getting any trays in until April. I'm still debating whether to wait and buy them or build my own.

How many layers deep of cigars are you gitting into those Oliva tubo boxes? Just wanted an idea of how much storage I could get using your exact same set up.

I use old cigar boxes or make my own. It is much easier than you would think. Just get a box clamp for the sides and router for the slits in the bottom. Glue together and thats it.

Up to 54 RG, I'm getting 2 layers. The Oliva boxes ride on top of each other without crushing the sticks. I normally buy Toro sized sticks so I can easily get a box to fit in one Tubos box. I have a Tubos box with 5x54 sticks in that I have 2 layers and 28 sticks in the box. Larger than 54 RG you might not get 2 layers, and still be able to put another box on top. Hope this helps.

I've got a bunch of Spanish Cedar that I would like to make 4" high boxes. What kind of router bit do I need for the slits? Thanks,

Rick

Heh. I just posted a WTB for trays. Then read this post. I'm interested in 2 of them (and would be just fine buying all 4 of them)... but I don't want to hijack josho2001's opportunity... so I'd grab 'em if josho2001 doesn't want them.

(Or, josho, if you don't want all four and want to sell two to me, or if you'd like me to buy all four and send you two, or whatever, I'm interested. And, of course, no hard feeling if you just want them all!)
