Hygrometer Help - Should I return it?

Hi everyone. It's nice to be aboard.

I've been smoking cigars for about a year now, But only got my small humidor recently, so I'd still consider myself a newbie.

I performed the salt test on my hygrometer, but the result was 65% RH, rather than the expected 75%. I almost certain that I performed the test right. I used a solution of 50% distilled water and 50% PG, rather than just distilled water, though. Could this have had any influence on the test?

In any case, would you advice me to return the hygrometer for another one (could another of the same brand be correct?, or should I get another brand?), or should I just go on using it, and just adding 10% to whatever it reads?

First off; welcome to the jungle!

I think you should redo the test, using 50/50-solution is not going to produce the same result as distilled water.

And when you've done a proper salt test and calibration once, do it again at least once to see that you get the same result (after letting the hygro settle down in room humidity between).

Or just use heartfelt's beads in the RH you want, and use the hygro to see the trend (if it starts dropping it's time to refill the beads with distilled water) no matter what % it says it is.

Is this digital or analog? If it is not digital, get a digital.

Also redo the salt test with distilled water.
Just make sure the salt is damp and it should be good to go in 48 hours.

By all means you should be using a digital hygrometer, and an adjustable one would be best so that you can calibrate it based on how much it is off. Not sure what you are using so that is just a heads up.

A 50/50 PG solution will yield a 70% RH.
Your hygrometer is off five points.
You didn't mention what kind of hygrometer you have, so I'm going to parrot what everyone before me has said. "Get a decent calibratable hygrometer and do a salt test".
There's a reason why EVERYONE says that.
It's because there is NO substitute, and nothing else that works as well.
That means if you have a Wally hygrometer and you are using pg to test, you have neither part right.
A good hygrometer is 20 bucks. Salt is nearly free.
If you're gonna play the game, you really have to have the right stuff.
