Question What is the right cut?

Hello Would like to know what each cut is and why someone would use that cut. Here is what happened today.

Today while over at a friends house I was kind enough to bring a cigar just for him this time. Where I mostly just bring 1 or 2 for me to smoke in the time I will be there. So I wanted to share a Cohiba Toro Tubo with him and cut my Cigar and lit it and offered to cut his for him and he said sure. After I cut it and handed it back to him he was like OMG you just ruined it. I was caught off guard and did not know how I could have messed it up seeing it was a clean cut. Then he said that It should not have been a straight cut and now he would not be able to smoke it. When I showed him with my Cigar that it was fine and no little tobacco parts. Explained that I smoke Hand Made with Long Leaf cigars then he changed his tune. He did not know it was with long or broad leaf tobacco. After he lit the cigar and asked how much I paid for them I said that the cost was not a issue but that I could buy 8 of my Daily smokes for the price of these 2. As I left his house today I left him with one of my daily smokes and he has already lit it up but called and said it would be there for me tomorrow when i return because the Cohiba was 10 time better LOL.

OK so if you made it this far, My question is what is the best cut? I have a Plug and a 2 bladed Guillotine that I use most of the time. I also have a V cut if I can find it. Can anyone shed some light for me?

Thank You
James.

Re: What is the right cut?

Personal preference, there is no one "right" cut. I like the straight Guillotine of a Palio, but that is just my preference.

Re: What is the right cut?

Kinda sounds like he was being a snob about it.
Truly, there is no 'best' cut, it all depends on personal preference.
Double-Blade guillotine always seem to work best for me.
As long as it doesnt completely total the cigar, whats the difference?
However you will find that punches have a habit of getting tar buildup.

Re: What is the right cut?

my I don't think he ever had a cigar that was well real. I mean to me I try and find a fine Cigar that is Hand made. I have smoked a few to find out that not all the hand made Cigars I have smoked have been hand rolled. Did not know there was a difference?? But i did find a Cigar that said it was machine rolled and hand made??? Don't ask I don't remember what one it was. I have smoked many since. LOL. When I asked what it was I was told "that some cigars are mislabeled as hand made because the wrapper was rolled by hand over a binder containing short filler, which was bunched and bound by machines." That was there way to prove they were not mislabeling.

I prefer to carry a Wakizashi on me for my cigars. Any cut less than that is simply uncivilized.

While a Wakizashi works very well, I find it cumbersome and needs a lot of space for a clean cutting motion, difficult in crowded bars. For less than vintage cigars, I've found the keris to be just all round useful.

But as mentioned earlier, it is all down to personal preference, there is no one "right" cut. Straight cut, V-cut, punch, biting or peeling the cap off is all good.

Re: What is the right cut?

Hey man - depends entirely on what you like. For me, I use different cuts on different cigars. If I am smoking a mild or medium bodied robusto (think Padilla Hybrid or 5 Vegas Gold) I will almost always punch it because it concentrates the smoke a bit more. If I am smoking a mild or medium torpedo, angle cut almost always to direct the smoke towards the palate and concentrate it a bit. Pigtails get bit, and pretty much everything else gets a double blade guillotine cut, with the occasional v-cut in there to spice things up a bit. Variety is the spice of life, but do what you like. I only do different cuts on different cigars because I have experimented with a lot of different ones on different sticks and found what I like. You should do the same.

Re: What is the right cut?

whatever cut gets the smoke flowin' .

seriously, i really like the palio. i've never owned a v, though i have used a one and like it. a buddy of mine will acutally makes an "X" cut, two nips with a v-cutter. I've tried the Dickman cut and it's OK, just a little strange to get use to.

here is JR's cutting page, pretty informative.

http://www.jrcigars.com/index.cfm?page=jrcu_cutting

but what ever make the cigar enjoyable is what you should do.

Re: What is the right cut?

The Dickman is good on a Belli or a Torp since it opens up quite an area and still leaves the cap intact if the cut is done properly.

Re: What is the right cut?

I've heard that LFD suggests using a plug cutter on their chisels. A straight cutter (guillotine) works best for a belicoso. Beyond that I believe that it's up to personal likes and dislikes of the smoker.

Re: What is the right cut?

My buddy lives and dies by the Dickman cut. I like taking as little as possible off the cap. To each his own.

Re: What is the right cut?

Maybe I am missing the point, but it seems that he should have just thanked you for the freebie and the cut and not tried to show you up on it. You where nice enough to share a great cigar with him and he complains about the cut? Sorry, but if you bring me a Cohiba my response would be THANK YOU and we would enjoy the cigars together!
