Help!! Burnt cigar is stinking up my humidor!!

SO a few months ago me and my roommate split the price of a 25 ct humidor. Everything has been fine and I've been maintaining it very well. I only have about 7 cigars but they're pretty expensive ones. They include 3 opus robustos, an anejo #46, a casa fuente super belisco, a god of fire churchill 2005, and a olivia "o" series petite perfecto.

Now being a college student I've spent a good portion of my measly amount of extra cash on this little collection of excellent cigars. The casa fuente and the GOF were both gifts from my wonderful sister who went out of her way when she went to Las Vegas and supprised me with some cigars that I can't wait to smoke. (Side note: The casa fuente has a crack in the wrapper, IM not sure if the guy at the LV store sold it to her like or if that happened on the plane or something so Im kind of bummed out about it. But Im going to see if I can fix it.) The opus x cigars I bought from one of the members here and I've been saving them as a graduation smoke for my roommate and another good friend. I had another anejo but that one is somehow turned to ash in the presence of my best friend who visited me over the weekend .

Ok now to the situation. My roomie just came back from vacation. Being the great guy that he is he tried to bring some "Cubans" back with him. He basically picked them up off some guy in the street before he left so I could try my first cuban. So today he came back and after comparing the cigars to pictures on here and noticing their poor construction and very soft feel, I've come to conclusion that they are probably fake. Also there is some green discoloration on a few of the wrappers. Of course I didn't say anything I just sat there and enjoyed a smoke and thanked him graciously.

He didn't finish his cigar so he scrapped off the ash and put it back in the humi. Now, the humi smells horrible and Im afraid my very valuable cigars are going to be tainted because they are starting to smell like burnt grass.

What should I do? Should I get a new humi? Right now I have an empty cigar box I can put them in, should I do that? Or am I totally overreacting? I really need some help here guys...

I'd personally get my cigars out asap... Tell your room mate to pitch his 1/2 smoked fugazzi (or isolate it for him) & air out the humi before you put anything of value back in there. I wouldn't worry about a few hours of exposure, but after a couple of days you might be running into trouble. A zip-lock bag or tupperware container will keep your cigars from drying out while you sort another storage arrangement.

Dont chuck it yet. Put your box inside a ziplock bag or just put the smokes directly in the bag with the pillow(?). They will be fine for up to a couple of weeks while you try to salvage your humidor. Give all the inside surfaces a light sanding with very fine grit sandpaper. The tray top and bottom as well, if there is one. Leave it open to the air for a few days. Then put a small container with baking soda or a few pieces of charcoal(hardwood is best as it has no chemicals). Close the lid and leave it for an additional day or two checking it once to see if there is any residual odor. Take the extra charcoal and place in bbq and make yourself a steak. After this the odor should be gone, then start over with the seasoning process and you should be good to go.

Re: Burnt cigar is stinking up my humidor!! help!!

a) slap your roommate and give him a bill for messing up your quality smokes

b) isolate them like others have said, and see if they heal themselves

c) for wrapper cracks, as long as you keep an eye on it, should be ok (unless it's really bad). You can also use pectin as a natural glue

Do this, a friend of mine did the same thing putting in a burnt smoke and did pretty much what bobarian said and everything worked out fine. Good luck!

Re: Burnt cigar is stinking up my humidor!! help!!

how long was it in the humi?

i know my friend left his nub in a cigar tubo, and closed the lid - next morning he opened the lid and it smelt GOD AWFUL.

I hope you can recover your cigars to good quality - keep us updated

andy

And don't breathe in any spanish cedar dust when you do the sanding - if that's what the humi is lined with. It's supposed to be very toxic.
