Colibri lighter question...

I'm kind of lighter stupid, so I really don't know the answer. I've been living in the dark ages with cigars for ten years using only matches and cheap Bic lighters. Decided to try some new age stuff. Bought a Colibri CX Gear lighter. Torch, I believe?? Anyway, it works, but is this all there is? Oh, it glows orange alright, but that's about it. There is a hint of bluish flame if I turn out the lights and squint. I did fiddle with the adjustment knob on the bottom, but turning it just puts it out. If this is how this lighter is supposed to work, I'm disapointed. It will light a cigarette, but it's not at all easy to light a stogie. Rubbing two sticks together might be faster. Any ideas? Could it be plugged or something?

Hey you got the nifty tool and it has a built in thermometer and compass. I think they were designed for the outdoorsman who may want to take an occasional hit of crack out in the wild. Since they are designed to be windproof you are not going to get much of a flame.

I use a Trifecta and they work great (3 jets) for cigars.

No thermometer and compass, but it does have neato blue light plus a screwdriver and knife. By the way, the blue light is cool.

I have a Tilton that has been returned for repairs 3 times in a little more than one year! The last time I sent it off they said it was out of warranty eventhough it had been only 7mo. since it's last service. They only guarantee their repairs for 6 months

It was a nice light while it lasted.

A lot of people will tell you to stay away from Colibri.

I have three of them. I dont know the type. One has a built in cutter and all three are torches of course. I have never had trouble with any of them.

Dont worry about the flame color or anything. Just enjoy it and light many, many cigars with it.

Re: Colibri lighter question...

The colibri works great for me - but - I did need to change to colibri fuel though. The stuff I was using wasn't clean enough - strange to say, but it made a difference - But - if you ask me - the best lighter is the Blazer MicroTorch - hands down.

I hear this a lot. I thought they were the best and then I was going to buy one from famous. I was surfing around here first and everyone was talking about how bad they are. Is it possible they are not bad but the acutal type of fuel matters. I know with Zippo's if you're not using Zippo fuel then it will not work as well.

They aren't called torches for nothing! If you can't get a blue flame (torch) out of it, get another one they are much better than matches for lighting and besides they sound really cool when you fire them up and are good for some oohs and aahs from the non-cigar smokers.

Re: Colibri lighter question...

If you're buying a Colibri lighter, I personally would recommend going to a shop that will let you fire them up before buying.

I went through about five before I found one I liked. A lot of models have a really weird way of having the cap flip up so that the cap actually blocks you from easily using the flame to light a cigar. One model had a cap that was so tall, the flame didn't extend beyond the cap. So you would have to practically put the cigar through where your thumb was to light the cigar.

I finally found one where the cap "slid" away when you pressed the ignition, and thus the flame was readily acessible from any angle, for easy cigar lighting.
