help with my Savoy

Hello all,

I am a new board member and I am happy I found this place. I have always been into cigars but never had a big collection or even a humidor. My wife bought me a new Savory humidor for our anniversary this past weekend and I was very happy and suprised. She also bought me six cigars to place inside it. As soon as I opened the gift I started reading on the net how to season the humidor and all the things that go with it. This was on Saturday the 28th. I have having problems getting the RH right. I have read all the instructions such as wiping the inside down with a damp towel and distilled water. I have also placed a small bowl of distilled water inside the box and soaked the Humidifier in distilled water. I tried the salt test on the meter but it would never go above 61%. Now I have placed the meter inside the box with the bowl of water and the humidifier and I still can't get the RH to go above 45%. It has set for the last few days with the bowl in it and it doesn't seem to be moving. In the mean time I have placed the sticks in a ziplock with a damp towel of distilled water to keep them humid but I really want to get the box working right. I have check the seal with a flashlight and I don't see any light.

Can someone give me any suggetions how what I am doing wrong and why the humidty won't get closer to the 70 range?

It very well may be in the 70 range. Is the hygrometer digital or analog ? .. if it's analog, consider ditching it for a digital one. Either way, there should be an adjustment on the hygrometer, so when you do the salt test, you can manually adjust it to the right RH.....you consider the salt test to be working & have faith.

If you do some searching around the forum, or if you just sit back and wait ... you are gunna get the same set of answers over and over : "Get a digital hygrometer and get some 65% (or 70% - I prefer 65%) beads." Listen to the voices....they're good voices. .... not like those from the dog next door. Bad ... bad voices.

First of all welcome to CS.

I think that is your problem, your hygro is not accurate. There is no way you could have all of the humidity agents inside your humidor and have that low of RH.

I would recommend you pick up a digital hygrometer that can be calibrated, salt test it and then you will have an accurate representation of your RH% level.

So you did the salt test on the hygrometer and it only got to 61% humidity? It should show 75%.

Sounds like a bum hygrometer. Is it adjustable? You might just want to purchase a new hygrometer.

Thanks for the quick replies. It is a analog and it is not adjustable. I will pick up a new digtal one tonight. It has drove me nuts the last few days as to why it wasn't working.

I only have 6 sticks at the moment but I am excited to get my box filled up and I want to get it set properly.

If it is reading 61% while salt-testing, it is just off by 14%. So if it's reading 45%, you are really at 59%. Although that still seems awfully low for the amount of moisture you have in there. Could be a bum unit.

One of my hygrometers is off by 11% -- which is pretty high, but it's constant so it's not that big of a deal.

Also you probably want to take the damp towel out of that ziplock. The sticks should be fine in a little Tupperware container for awhile. They are probably getting over humidified in that kind of environment.

I agree with all that has been said. You do need to go to a digital hygrometer. That being said, you have only been trying to season the humidor for 4 days. It is not uncommon for it to take a week to a week and a half for the Spanish Cedar to drink it's fill and stabilize. Patience is the key to properly preparing your humidor.
