Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
1. Buy a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store
1. Wipe it down with distilled. 2. Put a wet (with distilled) paper towel on a dish in it for 2-3 days. 3. Charge the humidification device with distilled 3. Fill it up with cigars Whatever you do don't go here... Don't blame me if you click this. |

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
First thing you want to do is season or condition it. Some will tell you to wipe down the inside with a paper towel that is SLIGHTLY damp with distilled water. I never did that, and mine is just fine now, but to each his own. What I did was took a small container of distilled water, heated it in the microwave (you can boil it on the stove, that's recommended, I just can't do that here in the dorm), and leave it in your humi. Once a day, boil the water again and put it back in with the lid closed. After about 3 days, the cedar in your humi should be sufficiently damp. Now check your hygro, and make sure that the humi is holding stead around 60ish (I THINK?) %RH. Then you can start putting sticks in. Also, if you don't have them already, I HIGHLY recommend you invest in some beads from David (Viper139) as they make humi upkeep incredibly simple. Anything else you need to know can be found either by searching, or feel free to PM me, and I'm sure some of the FOGs will check in here too.

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
There are many different ways and everyone has their favorite. Here is a couple of links that might help. There humidor should have come with Manufacture supported instructions, they might help also.
http://www.humidor-guide.com/ http://www.cigarhumidors-online.com/cheap-cigars-humidors-support/support_setup.html The thing is that it isn't a quick process, it takes time to do it right but it is worth it. Now, if you have some sticks waiting for their home sweet home put them in the stogie holiday Inn for a few days. Take a large Ziploc freezer bag or a well seal Tupperware container, a regular size clean (new) sponge, and distilled H2O. Add H2O to the sponge to it is just damp and place it in the medium Ziploc back with a portion of the seal open to air. Take your sticks and place them into another baggy and leave seal open. Place both baggies in the container or large Ziploc. The double bagging helps make sure that your sticks keep what humidity they have and not get any water on them. You can double bag the whole lot if you feel a need. This a temp. solution that works in a pinch. In fact, I used the baggies when I traveled until I got a good travel humidor. As to the Tupperware container, there are some that I heard of that store and age their stogies in that way. Not to sure on that, I haven’t tried it. I have tried a coolidor...neat bit of work that is.

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
Damp a non scented sponge with distilled water and gently wipe down the interior of your humi. Next fill up your humidifier by placing a mix of 50/50 PG solution and distilled water in a bowl and putting your humidifier half way down in the solution. Keep there for two or so minutes and then keep it upside down on a paper towel to get the excess water out so it doesnt drip all over your humi and stain it. Replace the humidifier in your humi, take the damp sponge and put on top of a zip lock bag and put on the bottom of your humi, let sit for a day. Repeat the process until your hygro reads 68 +/- a few %.

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
After you season it, you gotta FILL it. that is the expensive part.
This page has a lot of good information on starting out. This page has a lot of good internet stores to help out with buying as cheaply as possible. Like Da Klugs said dont go Here if you ever wanna pay off your credit cards Right now i'm sure it seems like that humidor will never be filled, but if you get into it, and have some disposable income, it will be filled in no time, and a cooler-a-dor is a good inexpensive way to store a lot of smokes. (I looked for a thread on it, but could not find it, im sure someone else here knows where it is) In order to not catch a whole lot of h3ll from people on this board you need to read this If you want to find out what people think of a cigar you hear of, i have found this to be a good place to find out about it I dunno if this is a lot more info than you wanted or not, but it should help. Good Luck and Happy Smoking David

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
1. Season your humidor (lots of good ways to do this). Basically all you are doing is making sure the wood in the humidor soaks up some moisture. I personally would NOT wipe the wood with a damp sponge, but that's just me. I'd place a small container of warm distilled water in there for a couple of days.
2. Buy a second humidor (or make a cooler-dor). You'll need more room in no time at all. I tried the sponge humidifying method for a while. I finally broke down and bought some beads from heardtfelt. I kick myself for waiting so long to buy these beads. |

Re: ok bought a nice humidor, now what??
Ditto what others here have said:
1) Season your humidor. I don't favor the wipe-down method. A new, damp sponge on a tray is all you need, but nuking it to warm it up to help evaporation doesn't hurt. 2) Digital hygrometer. Analogs bite. You're spending anywhere from $4 to $40 or more on a cigar, why risk it? It's an investment. Do it right. 3) Beads. Definitely beads. I'd offer you a tube full myself, but I'm all out. For your humidor size, you'd need only one tube, two at the most. But buy one extra, and keep it 'charged' in a ziplok next to a sponge so that when the RH in your humidor drops, you can always have a charged one to replenish. In the summer, generally speaking, they're rock solid, though. 4 Newbie Sampler Thread. Ya gotta be in it to win it.
