56 is a bit low. Most of us use thermo electric wine coolers a that keep things up to 67F. Those who do use a compressor type refrigerator use an external Johnson temperature controller to raise the temp to 65-67.

The biggest problem with low temps is maintaining a constant rh.

If your relative humidity is ok then 56 is fine.

Re: Is 56 degrees too low?

I have been sitting around 60-65 degrees and my RH has been dead-on 70% then entire time I have been checking (which has been a week now). Just make sure to check your RH daily...

Re: Is 56 degrees too low?

be a bit careful - 70% humidity at a temp of 70 does not equate to 70% humidity at temp of 60 - I'm not a scientist, I can't give you the exact reason, but it has to do with water vapor pressure - the cooler you go, the higher the humidity needs to be to keep the same water in the air

I keep my cabinet on the lowest level of my home, with the temps I get, I have my RH set to 65% during the spring/summer/fall, set it to 70% during the winter

here is an article:

This website shows a chart for comparison (not that I would follow this 100%):

But is this truly accurate? It says on there for someone storing their cigars at 60° to achieve a humidity comparitive to 70% you would need 99.17% humidity!:

60 13.26 99.17%

and for those storing at 65 degrees, as most of you here are, you would need 83.18%:

65 15.81 83.18%

Granted he's talking about comparing to 70% humidity but regardless the article still basically would disagree with everyone here using 65/65 as then your 65%rh would be the wrong number to be aiming for. I find this really hard to believe as so many here have perfect success with 65/65. I personally use 70%rh and currently my humi has dipped down around 66-67°. Never have any problems with my smokes.

No, Rev, it is not accurate at all. In fact, it's complete BS that people keep repeating over and over; it has big words so it must be true. It focuses on keeping a constant vapor pressure, completely ignoring the varying evaporation rates based on temperature.

For more information, try the search, this has been discussed many times.

Re: Is 56 degrees too low?

does the chart tie to levels that people should set RH levels at in their humi, no. I offer it only as a example that if 70/70 is the ideal setting for your humi, is not the same long term as 57/70

As I said in the original reply, spring/summer/fall, when the ave temp where I have the humi is about 72, I keep 65% humi. Winter, when the ave temp would be about 62-65, I heep a 70% humi
