Thompson Humidor quality

This is a discussion on Thompson Humidor quality within the Cigar Accessory Questions forums, part of the Cigar Accessory Discussion category; I understand gorillas here seem to believe Thompson's Humidors are of questionable quality. Has anyone seen one like this: http://secure.thompsoncigar.com/defa...9&page=product ...

Question Thompson Humidor quality

I understand gorillas here seem to believe Thompson's Humidors are of questionable quality. Has anyone seen one like this:

http://secure.thompsoncigar.com/defa...9&page=product

I like the pull up drawers. I smoke a variety of blends from medium to maduro. Always wondered just how much blending occurs in my humi. Wouldn't these pull ups drawers keep the flavors separate?

I also read somewhere on this site that drawer type humidors are harder to maintain RH. Of course if I do buy this humi, I'll go all out and get beads.

Any pontificating would be much appreciated.

I can't say much for Thompson's Humidors since I have know experience with them, but I will say from experience that that humi will be to small to quick. I kept buying bigger and bigger desk tops till I finally broke down and got a decent cabnit humi for $340. It is a bit more but man having the space to buy boxes and just keep putting them in there is great. Here is a link to a thread about this humi http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18398

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

I received a Thompson Lucky 7 for Christmas from Svillekid and NinjaVanish. It was very well packed, had a nice finish with no smell other than a mild cedar smell in the interior, appears to close and seal well, with a magnetic doohickey for added door stability, nice hinges.

It was stable within a couple of days, and hasn't given me any trouble yet. My house tends to be dry, but if I can refrain from opening the humidor and running my fingers through my stock every fifteen minutes (it gets easier, eventually), my humidity is usually 68% to 70%. The analog hygrometer is even within a percent or two of being correct, though I still use a digital.

I'm no fogey, though. I've been at this seriously for maybe three or four months. I don't know if humidors get bad over time, so take it for what it is worth.

The reason TideRoll got the Lucky 7 humi for Christmas was that I have used the same one, with equally good results for about 6 months.

The reason I have a Lucky 7 humi is because Ninja Vanish had been using that humi for an additional 6 months, also without problems.

I can't speak to the other Thompson humis, but I find the Lucky 7 to be a good humi for my smoking needs. For long term storage, I use several of the smaller humis that the Lucky 7's replaced (2) 50ct and (1) 100ct chest types. The 100 ct came from Thompson maybe 18 months ago, and also no complaints.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

Ive got the Thompson Barrel Humi the sticks that came with it are worthless, but im happy with the quality of the humi. It holds a good constant RH, and without opening does not have to be recharged for 1-2 months at a time.
Ive also talked to others that have this same humi and they love it too.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

My entrance into the world of cigars was the purchase of a Thompsons humi, 300 ct I think. Still have it, still works as well as can be expected. No flaws in the construction or appearance. My only complaint is that it doesn't really hold humidity as well as I'd like during the winter heating months, but that might not be unique to my humidor or to other Thompson humidors in general.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

I have had 2 desk top Thompson humidors and they both functioned very well and one of them was gorgeous to boot. Only complaints I had was a huge metal oval thompson logo glued to the lid in plain sight and the crappy humidification devices that came with them. I have heard that they no longer have the metal logo attached but I am not sure about that.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

My desktop humi I bought from them is working pretty good. In the summer it holds 67-68% consistentlly and in the winter around 64-65%. This is just using the humidifier that came with it.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

I picked up my 150 count from Thompsons, so far it's been great no problems, cost me $100.00 came with a digital hygrometer. If you go through Thompson's try to get just the humi - the 100+ dog rocket deals that are offered with many of them, just my also pick up some humidifacation beads for it, get rid of the credos they suck, do a search, lots of other good vendors out there selling humidors. Also Thompson's will haunt you...forever

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

I do not have a thompson humidor but I have noticed lately that many other humidor websites are starting to offer the humis that Thompsons sell. Many of these site sell quality humis that work & I wouldn't think they would carry junk humidors.

I say look around at :

www.bargainhumidors.com
www.cheaphumidors.com
www.cigarsinternational.com

you may find one you like.

Typical Asian market humidors. Will they last forever? Is it great craftsmanship? No. But more often than not, they will get the job done for long enough to make them worth the money.

The Lucky 7's do not have the logos at all! The 100 count came with a logo plate with stick-em on back that you could use if you wanted to. I think you are probably right that they no longer have logos attached.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

My desktop humi came with thier big logo attatched. Kinda annoying to look at but other than that I cant complain because the humi has served me fine.

Re: Thompson Humidor quality

Thanks for all the replies.

I live fairly close to Thompson's so if I'm in the area , I stop in and look around. I've never bought via mail from them so I don't have to worry about the phone calls. I get a catalog from them about once every other month, but the same comes from CI.

I don't mind paying a bit extra for an item if I don't have to wait for it. CI's prices are good, but the shipping is a bit high (I usually get 2 day). For the cost of overnight, I can usually get it locally.

I guess Ill take a drive over to look at the Princeton. I guess I really just like the "gee whiz" factor of the fold out drawers. I'll report back if anyone is interested, on the quality of the humi.
