Temporary Humi Question

Newbie to the forum here. I am going to be getting a custom made humi this Christmas from my step-dad. He is an amazing woodworker and started making humis about a year ago for friends and family. I will post pics once I get it! Anyway, I bought a bunch of cigars recently for a trip to my lake cabin with a bunch of buddies, and we were rained in all weekend and didn't get to smoke most of them. Any good way to store these unti I get my humi without having to buy anything? I have hear you can throw them in a ziplock with a slice or two of bread, but that sounds kind of hokey. Any suggestions?

Re: Temporary Humi Question

Bread will grow mold. A couple of weeks in a ziploc with a small damp piece of paper towel or clean sponge would be ok, but to make it until Christmas I'd use tupperware or a ziploc container and get one of these:

Re: Temporary Humi Question

Simple solution.

Buy yourself a travel humidor, you can use it as temporary storage for now and have it for future use.

If you don't want to spend the cash, you could buy a cigar box from your local shop, a cheap hydro and humid device.

Yes, a travel humidor like a otterbox will work out perfectly.

Or you can make a tupperdor. All you need is some kind of Tupperware or other sealable type of plastic container and some humidity beads or water pillow and you’re set (check out www.cigarmony.com - Mark posts here frequently and has great service). It won’t put you back a lot and will be very easy to maintain until you get your Christmas present. Whatever you do, please stay away from placing food in with your cigars.

if you use the ziplock w/ a piece of paper towel be sure to put the paper in a seperate ziplock lock. leave the second ziplock unzipped. you dont want that directly on the smokes. just get the travel humi. you can use it now and later.

I agree. Get a travel humidor. I got one on c-bid for $30 shipped with 5 cigars. Not a bad deal at all imo, since most 5 ct. herf-a-dors cost $25 retail.

Re: Temporary Humi Question

Tupperdor. Get some of the cheap "disposable" tupperwares from the supermarket and throw a humi-care pillow in them.

That may be how I will go in the future, throw some spanish cedar in there to add to the cigar's character, and I could actually afford to store all of this stuff

Now to find a place to get walmart hygrometers in bulk for further savings.

Re: Temporary Humi Question

If the cigars are properly humidified going in, a piece of tupperware or gladware will do and you will need no humidification. They seal that well. I have a gladware container full of cigars, about 25, and have had no humidification in there for over 2 years! The rh is still rock steady at 65%.

Re: Temporary Humi Question

I did just go ahead and buy a 15 count Cigar Caddy and a small digital hyg. Seems to work pretty well, except it won't hold enough stogies! I think I may be starting to slip a little bit.............

I made the mistake of laying a wet paper towel over my first cigars I kept in a cigar box. Mold, mold, everywhere!

I still have a tupperdor in the Vino until I get my shelves/drawers. I keep cedar in there too!

Yeah, I made the mistake of putting a humidification device in mine and the RH got over 70% and I think that's why I had a small beetle outbreak.

AFAIK, the beetles hatch when the temperature reaches 70, not the humidity. As we all know the human body has an average temp of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the nasal passages...which means... (I think you can see where I'm going here).
