Digital Hygrometer Question - Is one salt test enough?

I hate to be a skeptic, but after completing a salt test for 24 hours, a brand new hygrometer I bought for $10.00 at a local Meijer store displayed 71%.

Do the majority of you re-run the test, run different tests or do you accept the read out as golden?

Thanks in advance,

Munt!

I usually run the test a couple of times, and leave it for about 48hrs. I also run the test every couple of months just to be sure. I evn go as far as placing everything in a tupperware container and then place the container in a ziploc.
WOW does that sound obesesive compulsive........

Just my if your base rh is a known(Boveda kit), and you cannot adjust the hygro, you take it as is and add or subtract to get your desired actual RH.. but some one here will "science" the answer for you..

For me there are too many variables with the salt test, and some digital hygrometer manufacturers say not to use it as it can cause corrosion on the electronics. The easiest and IMO the most accurate test is the Boveda One-Step Calibration Kit. The $5 is worth the peace of mind.

I test mine every so often.
I have one that was 4% off. Now it is about 15% off. This was within a few months, and I even tried replacing the batteries.

That is just a generic disclaimer. Corrosion can only occur if the hygro sits permantly in the "salt" environment. Boveda is a waste of $$$, imo. The following quote is from seanGAR talking about boveda:
Quote:
they are probably using cupric or cobalt chloride for 65%, lithium acetate for 69% and strontium chloride for 72%. One of the problems with these salts is that their relative humidity produced is affected by temperature. Generally the difference is 2% over the temperature range 15-20C. Sodium chloride does not vary significantly over that temperature range. So as far as calibrating a hygrometer is concerned, there is nothing as accurate and insensitive to temperature as saturated salt (sodium chloride).
I re-test after every battery change. Which is every 6-8 months.

I have no need for hygrometers.

I had hygrometers in all of my humidors and coolers but after purchasing beads a couple of years ago I noticed that my humidity was steady month in and month out. When the batteries started dying on my hygros I just put them in a drawer. I finally bought another one a few months ago and upon placing it in my humidor I found that surprise surprise... humidity = 64%

Every time one of these threads comes up I just have to go against Greg on this topic.

I am all for Boveda packets for both humidors and for testing hygrometers. I actually do not like the salt test, when I first started I tried it a couple of times and depending on how much water I added I got different results.

For some of my tupperdors (which I hardly open and seal really well), I have been using the same Boveda packets for almost 2 years, still holding steady at 66%.
