Current remote RH sensors

Now that I have 2 humidors and a "Rubbermaidador", I think I need a remote sensor arrangement. There have been recommendations in the past all over the place, but I'm curious to know what you guys have seen in recent times because models and sales come and go all the time.

I was at Kmart a few days ago, and they had a system that was $40 with one sensor, but they didn't have the extra sensors to go with it, so I hesitated, not knowing anything about the manufacturer or accuracy.

Obviously, I'm after accuracy, and if possible, the smallest sensors I can find a the most reasonable price.

Radio Shack - three channels possible, two different bases to choose from, online inventory status for your local stores.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

The problem with the RS website is that they don't say which models can accommodate 3 sensors. For instance, I'd be perfectly content with this one, but they don't say if I can add other remotes.

I also wonder what the difference is between this one and the one at Kmart. The display layouts seem to be the same, so I wonder if it means they're all made by the same manufacturer, and I wouldn't be paying an additional $10 for the Radio Shack stamp.

I don't think the first rs you are looking at allows for more sensors. You would need the second one you linked to. I haven't seen the Walmart unit.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

I was walking through my local Lowes this morning and happened to see the Oregon Scientific units for 29.95. Since I already have a base unit and 3 remotes I wasn’t to interested but you may want to take a peek on line clicky.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

Check out this eBay store....

I bought an Oregon Scientific Thermo-Hygro for $32.99. It included one wireless sensor. I ordered two additional sensors for $25.00/ea. They work great.

The seller is reputable. I received my order promptly.

I believe the Radio Shack models are made by Oregon Scientific. The basestation costs $50.00. eBay is a better deal if you can wait a bit for the item to be shipped to you.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

Yeah, I'm not in that much of a rush. Funny, some of those with multi-sensor capability are not advertised as being specifically capable of monitoring 3 different RH sensors. Their ad says:

Wireless sensor monitors and displays outdoor temperature and humidity (included). Multi-channel capability to monitor temperature in up to 3 remote locations (additional sensors required).

I wonder what the deal is on this unit, because it's not entirely clear. Also... WHOA!. They're getting $24 freakin' bucks for additional sensors??? WTF? That's outa control. Is there another alternative? I don't need ones with a display if I have a main display unit elsewhere.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

I've been very happy with my Radio Shack unit. The additional sensors were $14.95 each. All three work well and the base unit is solid.

Problem is this one doesn't say if it monitors RH or not.

Looks to be the same manufactuer as the RS Model: BAR668HGA notice the model number on ebay is BAR608HGA The RS remote units are $14.99

I think you will find several members have the Rs model and are happy with it.
I believe this is the only RS unit that supports multiple sensors.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I originally went to Kmart and came home with this one:

But they didn't have any additional sensors, so I then went to Radio Shack and got this one:

Now my problem is that the RS sensor seems to be VERY slow to respond. I have both the remote sensor and my Western Caliber III in the humidor. In the past three hours, the RS unit has only slowly crept up to 52%RH from 30-ish when I placed it in there, where my Caliber III will respond in seconds to opening the lid of the humidor. Secondly, the Caliber III reads 64%, which I salt tested to be +1, so that means it's at least 63%RH in my humidor, making the Radio Shack unit -10%. That's TOTALLY unacceptable.

Have you guys noticed this phenomenon of excruciatingly slow response, or is it possible I have a defective sensor? I understand, btw, that the sensors only update every 40 seconds, but this has been hours, and it's not gotten up past 52% so far.

The little RS $19.95 non-remote digital I have is quick to react up and down; the two RS senders w/base station are quite slow. I like 'em, but they want patience I guess.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

i have a RS model, im not sure which one it is, but it is small and white. It responds terribly slow i only used it for 1 week before i went to target and got a much better( and cheaper) unit.

Re: Current remote RH sensors

I don't mind so much that it might require 10 hours to settle in, because that means likewise that they won't overreact when I open the humidor to pull something out.

Is it possible that this unit is showing TOTAL humidity, rather than RELATIVE humidity?

Re: Current remote RH sensors

Ok, I woke up this morning, and the Radio Shack meter read 56% humidity. In the span of over 16 hours, it still hasn't managed to respond well enough to display the correct RH.

Do you guys think this is a defective sensor, or do they all suck this much?
