Refilling a Butane Lighter

I know it's out there somewhere, and maybe (probably) I'm just completely inept at using the search function, but I'm about to refill a porsche design pd6 I bought recently and I seem to remember reading somewhere about putting the lighter in the freezer first? I guess the question is what i the best way to do this?

I've heard the same about putting the lighter in the freezer so as to equalize what is coming into the lighter. I don't think I would put an expensive lighter into the freezer and the lighters I do have and they range into the $100 variety all the way down to the Ronson,,,,they fill and light just fine. Just ensure that you purge what is inside the lighter you want to fill and don't shake the can,,that only invites air bubbles. Turn the screw down all the way, refill the lighter, let it sit for at least a few minutes and then adjust the screw about half way and light,,,then adjust your ligher to how you like it.

I put my Dupont in the freezer for 15 minutes and warm the butane can in my hands. Filling takes less than a minute. Trying to fill butane in a warm lighter is hard.

How do you tell when it's full, and should the lighter be upside down when being filled?

Re: Refilling a Butane Lighter

I suspect the nozzle will start to spit when full. I use Dupont "one fill" cans which have a sight glass of sorts to tell me when the butane has emptied into the lighter. Lighter upside down? This is the way I do it, but it probably doesn't matter. I sometime shake it while filling, but again, the Dupont can screws onto the lighter to make the job simple

Re: Refilling a Butane Lighter

The butane can should always be upside down as you want the liquid butane and not the gaseous butane to flow into the lighter. The liquid, being heavier, will always sink beneath the gas and thus be forced out of the spout.

The lighter will be full when the pressures equalize (can and lighter). This should be within the first few seconds but that is probably why the Xicar procedure has a 10 second time period. I personally don't have sputtering from the lighter until I remove the can of butane.
