Question re-humidifying my humidor-pls help!

Hi,
I have not use my humidor for almost a year. Now I want to start using it again. Is this the correct way to re-humidifying my humidor?

Put a egg cup with distilled water in the humidor with the hygrometer and beads. Do I have to wet the beads?

Then wait unit the humidity reaches the 68 - 72% range.

Starting from bone dry, I would definitely wet the beads. Also, wouldn't hurt to wipe down the inside with a damp (not wet) paper towel. And remember to have patience, it is going to take a while. Hope that helps

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the beads are "bone" dry. I have the beads in my hygrometer. Silly question-but how much water should I put on the beads?

Once you get the humidity set, your beads should be about 60% wet (clear). I would spray/wet them at least 60% for now since you're setting it up. You've got the water cup in there and the humi will start to absorb the moisture. Check it and remoisten when needed.

As mentioned just take your time, it could take several days. Keep an eye on the hygro. and when it reaches stable levels, take out the water cup and let the beads do the work.

Good luck!

A warm cup of water will help get the humidor seasoned a bit faster. Not quite boiling but close to.

Good Luck.

I know a lot of people suggest wiping not wiping down the inside with a damp rag, but I tend to shy away from it because it might warp, stain or raise the grain on the wood lining. Instead, I prefer to put a little container of water in the humi on top of a saucer. The wood will absorb the water as it evaporates.

I used a sponge with distilled water. Just make sure you put a plastic bag or something under the sponge so it is not sitting on bare wood.

Shawn
this has worked best for me. Wipe down the interior sparsely with as little water possible. then (what i did) nuke a dish of DW.. maximum surface area with a sponge on it as welll.. so a soaked sponge... on a dish with 2-3 mm of water on it... nuked.. alot of DW and alot of surface area... worked well during my seasoning process!

But now the winter weather is holding me at about 61-62% RH.... boo

And like Blaylock said, mine took 10-11 days to get it to satisfactory conditions.. i've heard that "patience is a virtue"... but i don't know what that means!

Thanks for all the replies

I gave been checking the humidity daily and it seems to be going up 1% everyday. It has now reached 66% /67%

Does anyone think that the humidor has
properly stabilized?

I got mine to hold right around 70-72% because i knew when i put cigars in there they would pull it down some. I went from 72% to adding 65% beads and 20+ cigars and after 3-4 days it had stabilized right at 64-67% which is where i want it to be. But like bob said winter is taking a toll on mine now and I'm lucky to get 64%
