Non-Distilled Water on beads

It's day 8 of my cruise, out of 14 days. Beads are dry because my makeshift humidor here doesn't have that good of a seal. Seriously considering using regular bottled water, anyone got anything to say that might help stop me?!?!?!

Uh ... not really. You should be able to find some distilled in the pharmacy. In any case, you can put a napkin in the door that is wet with tap water and that will increase humidity and partially charge the beads without directly spraying the beads. The minerals will not leave the napkin, just the water vapor.

Re: Non-Distilled Water on beads

If that is all you have then I'm sure for the short term (6 days) it would provide the humidity you need. No stops on the cruise where you might get distilled water? I think the concern is trace minerals and the deposits left behind. Might want to replace the beads if you do that.

Please keep in mind that I have no idea what I'm talking about and there's a darn good chance I'm very much wrong.

Re: Non-Distilled Water on beads

nah not a single stop has had any so far, it's crazy. so will it ruin the beads? i doubt that it would do anything negative to the cigars in a matter of 4 days. but i may be wrong, any others?

Re: Non-Distilled Water on beads

In the few days without passive humidification I believe your sticks will be fine.
You're on a cruise.
Probably 40 - 50% humidity in the air..or more..
The Ship's PLANT ENGINEERING and the PHARMACY (as stated above) are places you can get Distilled water...THE LAUNDRY will also have some..

Whoever is assigned to make your cruise unforgettable will have access to all these areas.

It's more complicated than that. You have to catch the steam, which is the distillate, and direct it into a container where it collects as the distilled water, leaving the trace minerals in the container you boiled it in.

But I imagine you should be able to acquire bottled water on a cruise ship...but yes, non-distilled water will clog the beads up with the trace minerals and make them less effective.

I have an idea that might just fit your circumstance.
Take the beds in the head, turn on the shower, full force hot water and, make the place a steam room. Watch as your beads fill with pure water vapor from the showers steam. (Don't put the beads
directly in the shower)

Re: Non-Distilled Water on beads

You see that stuff that builds a nice ring at the water level of your toilet. It's calcium and other heavy minerals present in tap water. You don't want that nastiness building up in your humidor. It'll plug the pores in the beads and make them less effective too!

That is the best idea I've ever heard. I will never again spend $2.00 on a gallon of distilled water when i only need a few drops.

It would probably cost more to run the shower than buy the water, but if you're in a bind I guess it's an alternative.
