analog hygrometer time to register rh?

Should a (cheapo) analog hygrometer ever take more than a minute or two to register the rh reading? (i.e. settle down to a reading, stop changing)?

Re: analog hygrometer time to register rh?

Hey mmblz. I'm only just starting to get engaged here on the board a little more. I can only speak from my personal experience but I have a cheapo that came with my first humidor that I keep very very calibrated. I know because I also use a digital as backup. For the analog portion I can say I notice if I open the humidor (it is a small 75ct) that puppy drops like a rock seeign as how it is in the basement and the RH in the basement itself is about 32...... 10-20 minutes after I close it the digital is back up to 67 and the analog (if I take a quick peek) is back as well. All things considered admittedly it seems to take longer to register increases (by a few minutes if at all) than to register drops. Just my observation....

I think the general position here of most gorillas is that analog hygrometers suck without exception. I wouldn't keep valued sticks with an analog hygrometer.

Not entirely the case. I have a chepo analog that came with my desktop thompons humi and it came just about perfectly calibrated. I have a digital Rad Shack in with it and the digital is -3 and reading 68% which would make the rh at 71%. My analog is reading 70% which is pretty damn close. It usually takes around 30 min to gague the humidity. If you wrapped the analog in a damp towel it would take around 25-30 min for the reading to be around 100%.
