Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

I'm a real bone head when it comes to DIYs. I really want to convert a rectangular plastic-shelled humidifier to a bead holder to save space. I could buy the aluminum ones from heartfelt, but they're too expensive for me, and I already bought my fourth tube yesterday.

I've seen pictures of people cutting it open with a small circular saw, but I have no idea how they would seal that.

And ideas or walkthroughs?

Ive never done it, but since it is plastic, i would assume that you could just superglue it together. Ive been thinking of doing that myself, but as dry as it is in here with the heat on, im just gonna keep my humidifier to help keep the RH up.

I've done one, and plan to do another. As to the adhesive to reconstruct? I recommend a tube of "GOOP"... available at the hardware and home centers. They have various packaging schemes (household, marine, sports, etc.), but it's all the same stuff, and it all works well!

Be careful that the adhesive doesn't emit any kind of smell or gas that might be picked up by the beads, cigars, etc.

RAD... Good point, and it works!

I use the "panty-bags" in my coolerdors... Leave them on small plates... Pull the plates out and mist them with distilled water, as needed... And they work great!

As for the retro-fit for the humidors, space is at a premium, and the GOOP works nicely to put the vent plate back in place... Though it DOES take 24 hours to cure out properly!

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

My humidifiers just kind of "snapped" apart into a top and bottom piece. I filled them with beads and snapped them back together, then mist them with distilled water when they need to be charged.

Mine snapped together also . But I did go to a craft store and bought some aluminum wire form with the smallest hoels in it that I saw , I cut it to be just a little big and I also used a double layer of it with the pattern reversed , so that I can still see the beads , however some small pieces do fall through occasionally . They work great and look alot nicer then the bags that are sold for the beads . The humidifiers I have are made by Savoy , they have them at Holt's for about $7.50 each . Good luck .

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

I just took a few old tubos, and poked some holes in them. They work great, no fragments, and take up one cigar's worth of space. If that one cigar's worth of space makes such a big difference.. well.. go smoke one, problem solved!

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

I realized that mine is also a snappable one (savoy). It took my quite a while to pry it open tho.

I'm gonna paint these matt black or glossy silver, air them out, then inlay some stainless steel mesh to store the beads in.

Gonna do a photo walkthrough when I get the time.

Thanks for the advice guys

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

I just did this, if you can get the humidifier open and take the insides out then you're good to go. Take your beads, put them in panty hose and put it back together.

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

All of my old plastic foam humidifiers also just snap apart and back together. I washed the plastic once I removed the oasis foam. You can buy cheap knee high pantyhose at Wallys at 4 pr for $1. I put just enough beads in the hose foot to fill the plastic humidifiers, tie it off and cut off the rest.

Re: Converting humidifier to bead holder. How?

It's been said before but why do this if you can just use "pantyhose"?

I keep all my beads in pantyhose no matter what the amount is. The pantyhose allows the beads to conform to any space like between boxes in my coolerdor or lay really flat in my regular humidor. They are easy to rehumidify and take up less space.

Just my

Be careful about rust if you use the stainless steel...the beads hold moisture, and the rust probably would not be a good thing.
