Thinking about the Vicksburg

I noticed that several members have purchased the Vicksburg humidor. I've run out of room in my desktop humi and I am considering the Vicksburg. For those who own the Vicksburg, how do you rate your experience? Any quality problems -- gaps, warping, etc.? I'm in a very dry climate (Denver, CO) which I imagine is harder on Humis. Per a post last month, my Elie Bleu has warped so I guess I'm being extra careful.

...also considering the Oasis XL Plus with the purchase. It seems like the most maintenance-free option.

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

I just got one a few days ago. Looks pretty good out of the box - well constructed, etc. Obviously can't say longterm...

One note - as usual, the "500 cigars" quoted is more or less a myth.
The trays up top only hold one layer of cigars each (unless they were tiny), so after filling the trays, they only hold 46. In the bottom I put 4 boxes + humidifier that comes with it, then dividers, then narrow part which is holding another 40-50 singles. I could probably squeeze in one more box if it was the right size, and I could try to use the space which is currently empty above the humidifier. But anyways, for "standard use" - i.e. not just putting in hundreds of P.C.'s with no boxes, that gives me a count of about 225.

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

Thanks for the comments. I figured 500 cigars was a stretch but sounds like it will still be a vast improvement over my existing humi -- I struggle to shoe-horn 30 or 40 in there.

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

what mmblz said....exactly. that is how mine is also set up. It is a very nice humi tho for the money. just remember ....bubinga is the lighter color and the mohogany is darker. I think a few people have gotten stung on that.

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

IMO, use your existing humi to store cigars your going to smoke in the next couple weeks and pick up a cooler some beads and a digi hygrometer for <$60. You get so much more storage space and it works better than most humidors for a lot less money.

Then you can spend the cash you've saved on more sticks!!!

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

I agree with most Vicksburg owners above. I've had mine for about Three weeks and it is purring along at 70 rh. I would say though for those that have the amounts the top two trays because of the clearance can be double stacked. If I were home I'd post some quickies on how I have it organized.

I too was (not too shocked) at the 500 claim and look regularly at ways to optimize the storage. So the top two trays get double stacked since a few of my bundles are in the 20 range. The next two trays are single stacked. I also didn't put any boxes in the bottom but use only the dividers they provide. That allows you to stack things fairly high. Again since I'm dealing with mainly bundles of smokes that are the same and that I like, I have no problem stacking them high and thin which gets more storage out of it to me. As things stand right now I have two bays in the bottom open for my final two shipments coming in. Never though I'd fill the darned thing in under 3 weeks LOL.

If using boxes is more efficient (when I get some) I may switch the bottom sticks to boxes. Can you get two boxes in side by side I wonder?????

So you guys have good enough luck placing the included humidiification device in the bottom?

Oh but for the threads purposes... I really really like this humidor. For the price it is really a good deal. And the glass top is very convenient. The hygrometer that came with it... PERFECT +-0 on the reading.

That is a compelling option, but I would like something I can leave out because I live in a loft and unfortunately I don't have a lot of storage space to hide a coolerdor that would be readily accessible. I think I can work a deal to get the Vicksburg, the Oasis XL Plus and Caliber III for $200 ($215 with shipping), so I lose out on $140 of smokes, but I get the Oasis which should give me months of maintenance free operation. I should be able to extract $140 from my food budget once I have a home for the smokes.

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

others can chime in on this particular point, but I decided the Oasis would be better for a larger humidor, and that the included humidifier, plus maybe some beads, would be plenty for this one...

Re: Thinking about the Vicksburg

I have a Vicksburg and I have to say for the money this thing is quality. Holds a nice seal and is PERTY to look at LMAO. Of course as with every humidor and said above no way 500 will fit in there.

If you like looking at a cooler and have room go get one. If you don't have room for a cool and want a nice looking big ass humidor then go get the Vicksburg, you wont be disappointed at all. The hygometer that comes with it is one of the best out there.

I use the humidity beads in both my Gettysburg and my vicksburg and I have had no problems at all. I would save my money on the Oasis. I think they are better used in a larger cabinet type humidor , Just MHO.

I will post some pics tonight in the Humi pic thread

I bought a half pound of beads and gave the other humidifier away.

Do you think the Oasis is overkill? In Denver, it get's very dry: 24% outside right now (and 76 degrees by the way), and inside is probably even dryer. I have trouble keeping the humidity up in my humidor. I have friends that say the same thing.

I have one and am going to get another. I use the humidifier that came with it and mine runs 67-68% rh in the bottom and 63-65% rh on the top trays.

Don't give it another thought.
Both the Vicksburg and the Oasis XL Plus are a great buy.
Go for it and enjoy!

Dont get me wrong, I've got a nice humi but it's only for the smokes I'm going to use in the short term. All my boxes go into a cooler. I went down the road of buying a humidor to only find out it's too small in a couple months twice. Then decided it was time to setup a coolerdor for proper storage.
If you stay around here for very long your going to need lots of storage!!!!
