After the test...

I see threads about how to test to see if your humi isn't sealing properly. But...the million dollar question...how do I fix it. I did the flashlight test and I see tha' light!

What's a good way to seal up my 50count standard humi?

Thanks fellas!

I'm gonna try a little candlewax to improve the seal on a humi I have on the advice of an old guy in the know. It'll take a few days before I can say if it actually does anything besides make a mess. Maybe the guy is just messin' with me. Maybe not. Hard to tell with this gentleman someimes.

I'd try beeswax first. It stays softer so it won't crumble, and it will probably make a tighter seal. Plus it usually doesn't have any coloring so it won't stain the wood in case you decide wax isn't the right solution.

Re: After the test...

I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out. I read another thread about the potential for the wax to break away, but it sounded like hearsay vs. in-the-know.

Later Smokilator!

The beeswax thing sounds good. I happen to have a few pounds of it at work - easy enough to try and easier to work with than warm parrafin.

Beeswax at work??

And I'm stuck here wondering where I'm gonna' track down a hive! Not too many of them around during Colorado winters.

Who in the heck sells beeswax?

Re: After the test...

If you need some I can send ya some Sweet Nectar. I got a couple pounds of it around here.

If not, a lot of hard ware stores stock it. Lots of uses in wood working. I use it myself on rifle stocks.

Want to see if this will work as well.

Re: After the test...

Craft stores will carry it too because it's used in candle making as well as many other things. Some natural food stores also carry it because of uses in various natural beauty products.

Re: After the test...

If all else fails - consider moving up from the 50 ct to something larger. You can get a large humi at a good price. My smaller humi doesn't seal nearly as well as the larger model so I am constantly having to monitor the RH in it verse the larger model. Just something to consider. Also, try putting some distilled water in either a shot glass or something similar with a paper towel in the water inside of your humi. This may help.

It might be soft enough to work with just the heat from your hands. If not, try the microwave for a couple seconds. Melt as a last result - beaswax is pretty workable without melting.

Re: After the test...

Something else I should add. Most beaswax doesn't come in candle form. If you do decide to melt it, do it in a disposable dish and try "painting" it on rather than dripping it - I think you'll have better luck that way.
