Cigar pics

What's up everyone? Quick question- does anyone know how to reduce the number of kilobytes in a photo to fit on the forum? I took a couple pics of cigars generously given in a trade, but they're too big to upload as an attachment. Am I going about this incorrectly? Any help would be schweet.

Re: Cigar pics

Just open the pics in MS Paint, hit ctrl + W, then change the width/height of the photos. I use a 4 megapixel camera, and I find that 25% of the original height/width is usually small enough to be attached. What I'd really recommend though, is getting an account with photbucket.com, or some other free image hosting website, and putting your full size pics up, with thumbnail links. I use my personal webpage to host my cigar pics.

Re: Cigar pics

There's a shareware photo editor called IrfanView that can easily take a directory full of images and reduce them in a batch.

I've been using it for years.

It's great for doing stuff like: Take all the jpg images in this directory, reduce them so that the long side is 640 pixels long, and stick the results in this other directory.

I use Adobe Photoshop. Open the image, then go to Image on menu bar, image size, and change size to no more than 800x600, then save at about 50% quality (but I have my camera set to 2mb pic size). Usually saves it around 85-95kb size.

Even though I've been a Photoshop user since it was release, IrfanView is an awesome tool and I use it all the time!! Great for cropping, resizing, converting format, and allows quick browsing through your directories.

It is FREE and has lots of plug-ins for quirky types and even videos!! Highly Recommended!

Re: Cigar pics

In the future it may be easier to take VGA quality images when you plan to post them to the web. One step no mess.

Re: Cigar pics

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The problem I'm having now is this- When I resize the photo, it doesn't actually shrink the image, it just takes a chunk of whatever size I determine out of the original photo. I took a picture of the gars on the carpet and when I resize the photo to, say, 4X6 (just for example), I get a 4x6 image of the upper left hand corner of the photo- which is carpet and nothing else......

Make sure you're using a "resize" command rather than a "crop" command. Crop will take a piece of the image at the specified size while resize will resize the whole image.
