front hygrometer humidors...

I ordered a bubinga glass top from savoy and have read that the front hygrometer sucks. Is there an accurate analog hygrometer that can be used in that spot? there are other humidors that are like that too so there must be at least one analog hygro somewhere that's at least mostly accurate. I don't need it to be totally spot on but +/- 2% is good right? btw, I'll also have a digital, i just wanted the analog there to look nice but at least be functional.

I couldn't tell ya about an accurate analog.. mainly cuz I don't think any are, reliably. However, the analog SHOULD be adjustable, so you can adjust it to match the reading on your digital. I'm pretty sure mine's adjustable, I just haven't messed with it, cuz I don't really care, I trust my two digitals.

I have never seen an analog that was worth a piss. I would getr a digital for inside the humi and set the outside analog to 65 or 70 (your choice) and jam it so it stays there permanently. This way your analog dial will always "look" spot on and you will not have to deal with it. Just my

my digital is only 2% off from my digital which is a radio shack. What I did was I took off the analog from the lid and velcroed my digital in its place and put the analog in a different spot in my humi.

Mine is running about 5% off. It is good to know if there is a trend going on where it is running. It is noce to see it on the front, especially this time of year. It has been losing humidity off and on due to the lack of humidity in the winter months. I do have a digital in there too to feep a more accurate reading.

Re: front hygrometer humidors...

If the analog hygrometer that comes with the humi is made to fit into a hole in the front you will need to mount it regardless, as I doubt you'll find anything else with an exact fit and if you try to put something else there you will be compromising the seal of the humidor...you can get a Boveda Hygrometer calibration kit on ebay for $3-4 and it will allow you to get the front analog hygrometer fairly close so it looks pretty...that's about as far as that goes...beyond that get a digital hygrometer for inside the humi...one of the most accurate I've found are the Western Caliber III's also available on ebay, about $20...they usually run within 1-2%RH...most other digitals I've tried can be off by 3-5%RH...g'luck...

Re: front hygrometer humidors...

i guess I'll salt test it... my digital hygrometer is +1% off so I'll salt test both in order to get full accuracy on the analog...

Do not, I repeat, do not salt test a digital hygrometer...the salt will corrode the electronics inside the digital...see my post above about a Boveda Hygrometer Calibration Kit...

I"ve done this with both my WCIII's with no problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

er? to my understanding, salt water air will only cause damage over significant periods of time as in weeks if not longer. a few hours won't really do anything...

Re: front hygrometer humidors...

I've used both the salt and the Boveda. I really like the Boveda cause it is not messy and DEAD accurate (I don't want to risk damage either). As far as the analog hygro goes I agree with what the others have said. I got mine calibrated and then I use the digital in the box to monitor the levels. The one thing that I have noticed about the front mount is the level changes if there is anything (like sticks) blocking the back of the hygro. At first I was freaking out that is was reading in the upper 50's with a C.O.! The digital was right on at 66%. I shifted some stick around and it went back to matching the digital.
