Question Humidor Project

I have an old Ice Chest that I was thinking of converting into a humidor. I need the room and like the way the outside looks. It has three openings and is lined with what I think is galvanized steel. I am looking for help from anyone with experience working on a project like this. I am not sure if I should remove the steel lining or just apply wood over it. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Humidor Project

I once had a fellow ask me to think about doing a box like that for him. I never did it. But I did come up with what I believe is a good strategy.

The box appears to be oak. I think I would remove the liner and clean it really well. Line it with uniform size 1/4" (3/8", 1/2", whatever you prefer)spanish cedar boards. fit them loosely so they have room to expand, contract. Vertical on the sides and the back. Horizontal on the top and bottom. Instead of securing each board, fashion molding of 1/2" spanish cedar. Put the molding top and bottom where the boards meet. Maybe 2 screws on the side molding and 4 on the back. Make oblong holes (to allow movement around the screws) for screws, use some nice brass screws and washers (use a drill press and forstner bit to make a seat for the washer) to secure the molding. I'd make a molding to give a nice flush appearance where the door seats too. Use the same strategy to affix rails for shelf slides or supports. Boards and molding on the doors as well. There are some good weatherstripping products like those used on Aristocrats and Avallos for use as a door seal.

I wish I could find a box like that. Good luck! It's going to be great!

Well it took some time but I am done with the new box. It is lined with 1 inch Spanish cedar and as tight as a drum. I moved my extra stock from two coolers and now I think I will need more room again!

Very nice job Sam, it looks great!!

As for the room issue, why not just make Dave an offer on his unit? I'm sure he's ready to upgrade for additional space as well.
