Testing hygrometers with HumiPak?

I know the salt test is recommended, but I just got a humipack in a box of Fuentes, and thought it might be a way to test the accuracy of my hygrometers.

Anyone know of a reason why this might be a bad idea?

its not a bad idea, its the best way to calibrate a hygrometer.

As long as it is a fresh humidi-Pak and it is in a sealed environment it will work great..

Well, saturated salt is known to be extremely accurate .. bovedas report good accuracy but its lower than salt. Its probably adequate for calibration though.

the Boveda technology is based on saturated salt solutions. The Boveda claims accuracy to within 2%. That claim is based on use in a humidor that will not be airtight. If calibrating in an airtight container, the accuracy is within 2/10ths of a %. That info is from Tim at Humidipak.

Ron, there's an interesting computer printed set of numbers along one edge of the pack on the back that says: 245 5 - 69%. Can I presume that this means the particular run of packs from this batch are tested to 69% rather than 70%? That's pretty impressive if they can control their QC to that degree of accuracy.

The Bovedas come in 65,69, and 72%. I am not sure what % they use for the Fuente boxes.

they found it was cheaper to produce them at 69% than at 70%. I beleive they are accurate within 1%

This came directly out of a box of Hemingway Signatures we just bought last weekend, so the answer is 69. Nice number!

If that is the case, they are probably using cupric or cobalt chloride for 65%, lithium acetate for 69% and strontium chloride for 72%. One of the problems with these salts is that their relative humidity produced is affected by temperature. Generally the difference is 2% over the temperature range 15-20C. Sodium chloride does not vary significantly over that temperature range. So as far as calibrating a hygrometer is concerned, there is nothing as accurate and insensitive to temperature as saturated salt (sodium chloride).
