cigars + wine in a wine cooler?

I was thinking about getting a wine fridge as I was going to get 2 cases of my favorite wine whose vintage is disappearing quickly. After seeing that many use haier wine fridges as temperature controlled humidors, I was wondering if one could use a fridge for both wine aging and cigar aging. So two questions if I may:

1. Do all wine fridges retain humidity? I thought I read haier are air tight but some other brands are frost-free which means they de-humidify the fridge right?
2. Will the smell of the cigars affect the wine corks and through that, possibly the wine itself?

I would love to have this 2-in-1 thing so I don't need so much space...

Re: cigars + wine in a wine cooler?

Did you ever get an answer on this?

I'm asking cause I have a space in my basement that is perfect for a wine cellar, and when all is said and done, it will be awfully close to perfect for cigars. I'm thinking of a seperate cedar lined closet in the cellar with beads to keep the 5% range that the chiller will have from having a noticable effect. The temps will be a little cooler than most seem to keep, but at least mold shouldn't be a problem. I was thinking of 60 degrees as the set temp, little warm for wine, little cool for cigars. Would love to get down to 55 for wine, but afraid that may be too cool for cigars. Anyone got any thoughts?

BTW, I'm pretty sure I can sell the whole deal to my wife is she thinks we're building a wine cellar, no way she'll go for it if I'm building a walk in humidor.

i was wondering the same thing. unfortunately, i'm just starting to learn about proper cigar storage and i know absolutely nothing about wine storage. for the time being, my wine is just sitting on my countertop in the kitchen...and i swear after a while, they just don't taste right. club stogie + club wine-o?

IMHO, one problem you may have with temps in the low 60's-hi 50's, is keeping the RH high enough. I don't think cigars will age as well in cooler temps. If I had a cellar, I would think about keeping cigars there as well, as long as the humidity is 68% - 70%. Then I would drybox at room temp for a day before smoking.

Re: cigars + wine in a wine cooler?

The unit I'm looking at for the cooling unit will keep the RH from 60 to 70%, even as low as 50 degrees F. The higher humidity helps keep the corks swollen to minimize loss of wine through the cork, so really not worried about keeping the RH up, just trying to stabilize it a bit with beads cause the unit allows a 5% swing in RH. (wine is not as susceptable to small change in RH, just needs to be high-ish) So my question is, if I bother to build this large a humidor, will the lower temps alone negativly affect the cigars over a long period of time, since there is no way I'd be able to smoke as many as I could keep in there.

I would say that it WOULDNT have a neg effect, they just wont age very well in a cool climate

Re: cigars + wine in a wine cooler?

I boosted my wine fridge(85% full of wine) up to around 63 degrees. Putting a 25ct Humidor in later on this evening.

Lets see how it goes. Im a little worried about keeping a good rh level.

It would be too dry to keep cigars by themselves in that fridge. You could put them in a box with a humidity element and that would work. Put a hydrometer in the Haier and you'll see for your self.

Im actually going to season it first, then throw a boveda packet in and see how it works for the first month.

And I'll be crossing my fingers as well.

Look around there are several dual zone wine coolers out there. Here is one http://www.compactappliance.com/xq/J...t/TWR181ES.htm
Just might be what you're looking for.
