A public service announcement...

...from your friendly neighborhood Webmeister.

I know, and I've been waiting to get a round TUIT. Never, never, EVER trust an analog hygrometer - or even 2 analog hygrometers. They LIE - pure and simple!

Over the past few weeks, I sensed something was wrong in my big humidor but the meter said there wasn't. My precious lovelies were getting a little "moisture deprived". Last week I picked up enough beads to completely replace all the foam humidifiers and then some. Things improved ever so slightly, but now my hygrometer was reading 80% - holy crap!
:baffled:

Out of desparation, I picked up a digital hygrometer from the B&M last night for a little forensics work and my suspicions were confirmed. It would appear that when the ambient temp/rh in Charlotte changed radically the middle of last month, my analog hygrometers went whacko (technical term). The digital said the rh was at 53% now. I had to act, and act quickly! Everything was packed into a cooler while I rehabilitate my primary humi. It's back up to 62% now, even though the analog seems to be stuck at 83%.

So the lesson here boys and girls: invest in digital hygrometers before the humi is FUBAR and your sticks get hard. (go ahead - I dare ya)

We now return to your regularly scheduled herf...

Although I did tap the crap out of the gauge, I didn't think of using a .45 - good call! If you're looking for a humi and they offer an upgrade to the digital hygrometer, take it! My big humi is back up to 65% again, and my babies are starting to feel a lot better. Bottom line - never trust what the meter says - even if it is digital. Trust your hands. If the cigars do not feel as supple as they should, assume something has gone horribly awry. Same rule applies when you visit the humi at your B&M.

Forewarned is forearmed, and that is a terrible (and expensive) lesson to have to learn the hard way.

This is one reason why I use beads and electronic humidifiers. I rarely if ever look at my hydrometer. They truly are the next generation humidifier devices just for that reason.

Doesn't it work the same if you use the polyglycol solution... the same as the beads I mean. Isn't that solution supposed to regulate at 70% in the same way that the beads are?

The beads give a visual clue when they need to be recharged... they go from clear to white. You really don't need a hydrometer.

I agree with Shelby. I gave up on the hydrometers all together and trust the beads and my fingers. So far so good...

Damn analog hydrometers with their inaccurate [mumbling incoherently under breath]

I have one expensive analog which is very accurate.

But I also have 3 digital in my cooler.
