Something wrong with my new humidor
Today I received my eagerly awaited new 100 count humi. The first thing I did was test the seal by dropping the cover shut by a height of 1-2 inches. I got discouraged when I heard a loud "clank" when it shut. I tried several times and it always made that clank sound. I was expecting it to "swoosh", but it sounds like just an ordinary box being closed. I think the seal is faulty. My old 20 count humi doesn't have this problem.
Does anyone here own a humi that doesn't "swoosh" when it's closed? I already decided to return this but if anyone knows something I don't please let me know. The overall quality doesn't look too impressive either. You can tell it was mass produced. If you're interested here is the link: http://www.cheaphumidors.com/Merchan...oduct_Count=15 |

Has it been seasoned yet? The wood will swell once seasoned and may seal better.

I'd contact Cheap Humidors and ask them about it. According to their page...
"Every humidor goes through our proprietary inspection process on the production line before it receives the SureSeal™ stamp of approval. These tests are executed across the entire product line to make sure our humidors will function properly and preserve your cigars for years to come." Have you tried the dollar or flashlight tests? |

The first thing that came to mind was to season it but it may be a design issue. I can't tell by the pictures on line if it is a design issue. The seal may have been lost due to a rough shipping. Or, it could be a piece of shite from China or any third world country. You would think that they would put out better work when you're paid $15.00 a week to work 60 hours.

Like most above said, season it first then see how it works. I have a humidor that does not whoosh, but it works fine. I keep cigars I am planning on smoking soon (under 3 months) in it. A humidor does not need to be exactly airtight, it just needs to be able to retain moisture at an acceptable level. The biggest downside is you may have to recharge the humidifying element more often. If you are not slow aging cigars, but smoke fairly regularly, then the oxygen exchange you get from a humidor that does not seal super tight could actually be a pretty good thing.

Ok I decided to keep it for now and it's currently being seasoned. I did the flashlight test and it was fine, no light leaked through at all. After closer inspection I realized that the seal might actually be pretty tight. If I slowly close the lid and gently let it rest it will not close completely. The interior cedar lining in the lid prevents it from closing unless you give one final gentle push. And then when I open the lid I can feel and hear the resistance of lining breaking free from the body. It can be that this is how the humidor is supposed to operate. I wasn't expecting this and that's why I got nervous. Keep in mind though that dropping the lid from a 1-2 height will completely close the lid, but just won't "swoosh".
I'll update this thread in about a week so I can get this thing fully seasoned and I'll test how well it holds humidity. |

I would just return it bud. I doubt that seasoning it will swell the wood enough to get you that "woosh" sound of a good seal. As some have said, it still might do an adequate job. But honestly, is that what ya want? Or do you want one that you know is good and can leave it alone for a week or two if you are gone?

Well I seasoned it for 5 days and it held at 73% humidity the last 2 days. I took out the bowl of water and installed charged 70% RH beads into the humidifaction device. I let it sit another day and it has held at 69%. I just put my smokes in it and I'll check it tomorrow. So far so good. I have become pretty confident that the seal is fine. I'll try to post a pic this weekend.

The humidity is staying level. I'm now almost fully convinced that the humi is fine and will serve me well.
