Stainless steel is fine.

The cedar is an "optional extra" for smell alone - a cooler does not need it to regulate humidity, the beads do that for you. The boxes you put in will probably have enough of the desired aroma, so I'd just go that way, unless you see a good deal for the sp. cedar.

Talk to your B & M and see if they have any empty boxes --- see also if they would save them for you. Hope your cooler turns out for you!

Sorry Kieth, I've been away from the site for a while. Have you posted any pics on how your cooler turned out?

Re: HOW TO: Build a Coolidor

I just took the simplified route.

- Purchased 150 qt cooler.
- Ensured the drain plug was closed tightly.
- Placed cigars and boxes inside with a humidity source and 3/4 Lb Climmax Beads as a humidity buffer.

Been working great for about 10 years now.

Re: HOW TO: Build a Coolidor

I have a glass frigidoor! I took out the cooling element and added three oasis humi's and love the display and the cigar enviroment has been steady at 68 degrees and humi at 70. Turning a fridge into a humi is great! After 6 or 7 years, it has been great! I am going to get another glass refridgerator, and when it retires, it will become a humidor! Where in the hell is John (Skipper) when u need him? lol

Best,
OpusX

Stainless steel should be fine, you can still attach cedar to the walls or shelving.

I would suggest cigar box lids, the ones that slide out, not the ones on hinges, like the nub boxes. Check it out:

Here is a link to the nicest Coolador I have seen, step by step instructions and photos. And it's easy to build.

Re: HOW TO: Build a Coolidor

Thanks on the great write up Chris. Lots of good info. Still debating between a coolidor / fridgador or buying a electro wine cooler for the few weeks it gets warm around here. My parents have a ginormous broken stand up freezer from the 60's that would make a beautiful fridgador, so tempting...

Re: HOW TO: Build a Coolidor

Just a quick question here guys.

is it ok to store my cigars in ziploc bags inside my coolidor? I am in the process of building one right now and want a way to organize my singles when I move them into it.
