Cello vs naked!

I know this has been discussed a million times, but, bear with me and let me know your opinion regarding whether to take off the cellophane wrapper and place your naked beauties back into their box or humidor, or just leave them alone! Again.....take their clothes off and let them get friendly or be puritanical and leave their clothes on????
Best,
ylo2na

Joey,
I am concerned about the "dryness of my smokes" that I bought from on-line. Most of them give off that little crackily sound when you hold to your ear and carefully rub them between thumb and index finger. I thought by letting them go naked they would soak up some of the RH and bring them back....any ideas????

If they're too dry, then having the cello on acts as a nice buffer to slow the process of bringing it up to normal humidity; I've had a few cigar wrappers split because they were re-humidified too quickly. If they're not that dry, I've taken off the wrapper too before to have them re-humidify faster, but then I'll usually put them back on.

If I want to age a particular stick, the cello comes off. I love putting a milder cigar together with a sumatra wrapper stick. Sometimes the flavors will marry, and that is good stuff.

Leave them in the box... Leave the cello on (if they came "nude" leave 'em that way). Leave the box closed and do NOT give in to the temptation to check on them every few hours... <G> If a ribbon wraps the bundle, either remove or cut it... If it's a tight traditional "Box Press" you might remove one seegar to allow the rest to get more comfortable. Squid® suggests that you write the date of purchase or storage on the box somewhere, so you know how long you wanna let 'em sit... Further advice is available on the "Squid® Pay-TV Channel" for a mere $22.50 per minute... HAW!

I have read stuff from manufacturers and others. Seems it goes both ways as far as remove or not.
From what I've read, if you remove the cello, the tobacco is supposed age a bit quicker when it rests against the other sticks. However, they will also age well in the cello, just takes a bit longer. Early on in my smoking days, I removed the cello and found it to be more of a pain in the arse to take care of them because I found I was always rotaing them - which means more handling and as Joey said, the cello keeps them protected. I agree with squid, leave em the way they came packaged!

I also spoke with a firiend who is plastics and polymer engineer about cellophane on cigars. He told me that cellophone, while a plastic material, actually does breath and will allow moisture through over time. I figure he knows more about the stuff than I do, so I tend to believe what he said. Also makes a little sense if most in the industry package with cello - you would think they researched it before they strated wrapping sticks in the stuff!

If they showed up on your doorstep a bit dry, then I would suggest (as my friend did to me) put them in the humi and let them sit a while in the box. They will slowly hydrate over time.

That's just my 2 cents worth!

Thanks for the info about the cello., thats good to know that it will allow the rh to soak through. I for some reason think it would take less humi time without the cello!! MY 2 Pennys

I quite agree with Rocky. I have enjoyed a few that had sat with other smokes. But, most ended up being horrible. Two great sticks don't always meld into a great one. With my experience it usually turns out bad and runis both cigars. I will remove the cello only if they are going to be seperated with a divider or box. Just my $.02

Try this one: Take a regular R+J Cedros deluxe #2, take off the cello, but leave the cedar on it. Put it to sleep for 6 months, then smoke it. I also had success putting a CAO Gold nat with a RP Edge corojo with awesome results.

I usually take cigars out of tubes unless they are crystal (glass) and I am certain they have an air-tight seal. I've seen many a cigar covered with mold when pulled out of the tube months/years later.

For me, regarding cigars in tubes, I have so few of them that they are not a consideration for me. I usually dont purchase them unless a site is selling them dirt cheap or a friend wants to get rid of them! The one's I have I got from a friend who was giving up cigars and returning to a non-smoking status!
Best,
Ylo2na
