Cigar Oasis Mold
Alright guys, i couldn't find anything on this topic so i thought i'd go ahead and see if I could get some help from you all on this that would be great. I just bought a sweet humidor off of craig's list locally, and it's working great...the guy even threw in his old cigar oasis and a prometheus digi hygro/thermometer...i took the reservoir off the oasis and it has mold in it, so i'm going to trash that. But here's my predicament/question...the top part with the fan i want to use (it still works fine). The problem is that i can see some mold on the plastic sheet in the front hole (i'll post a pic)...i was thinkin about ordering some beads from heartfelt and placing those on the top shelf of the humidor and then just putting the fan on the bottom of the humidor and putting it on a timer that will let it run for 30 seconds every 4 hours. Would it be bad to still run the fan like this and is there any way to get the mold out of there? Or should i just buy a new reservoir and call it good?
Sorry for the long post...i appreciate any help you all can give! -Aaron

Use some rubbing alcohol. This should be a lot easier to take care of than mold on cigars, since the fan's just plastic and you can subject it to pretty much anything.

NO tilex or bleach. Rubbing alcohol..and not much. Just enough to kill the mold. and make sure you're using DISTILLED WATER.

I agree any mold remover should be able to get that out of there, then just monitor it to see if it creeps back in.

i'll use rubbing alcohol with a q-tip and then i'm just going to place it in the bottom of my humi and some beads on top and put the fan on a timer for 30 seconds ever 4 hours...does that sound like it would work?

I would use the q-tip idea with alcohol or diluted bleach. If you use bleach, wipe it down with distilled water afterward and let it air out for a day.

In my tower, I have 2 Cos & also 65% beads too. I wouldn't put the beads all at the top though, the water vapors (humidity) will want to travel upwards. I keep 1 Co near the bottom set at 65.0% and the other 1 shelf below the top level. The beads are set in the top, middle & bottom. I haven't had a problem in over 2 years with this setup. But whatever works for you is the one you should use! ![]() |

i think i'm going to put about an ounce of beads on the top shelf, 1 ounce in the middle, and 1 ounce in the bottom and then the CO in the bottom

As long as that covers your cubic inches then spreading them out is good.

I would do the R.A. and the q-tip cleaning everything very well, and let the oasis sit out of the humi for awhile to be sure you got it all. Next I would buy the new resivour with the Mold Retardant and monitor it very closely. It would be of great importance to clean the upper housing several times to be sure. The beads are great. I think that if you are through
and patient you will avoid any problems.

Just another thought on the beads....I've been told by some very goos friends (with over 35 years each smoking) that something about copper kills mold and that its a good idea to put a little piece in with the beads...no not a penny, they aren't copper any more, but a small piece of copper pipe, elbow, tee or something. I've done this too, with no problems.
Anyway...it's just a thought. |
