I built a walk-in (9x12) and had all the same kinds of questions you list. Unless you are wealthy, you are in for a big surprise, especially with the cost for Spanish Cedar. My recommendation to you would be to talk to lots of B&M owners and see what they have in the construction of their humidor. You will be surprised at what answers you will get. Remember, cigars are hearty and can tolerate lots of different environments as long as you can regulate the 70/70 rule. I am not sure how much influence Spanish Cedar has regarding taste and storage when you have a room that is well-insulated and the 70/70 rule is maintained. I am now 6 or 7 months into mine and it is doing well. Feel free to ask me any questions....I will be glad to answer. As of this writing, my reverse osmosis system is working, the a/c is working nicely and my cigars, again, are doing well. Go for it, you wont be sorry, no matter what you arrive at regarding construction. Insulation, the 70/70 rule and keeping it tightly closed will serve you well. Just remember, all kinds of guys store their cigars in plastic boxes or coolerdors they purchase at Walmart and supply it with the beads for the humidification and keep them in a dark, cool place. Most do very well. With that in mind, start laying down those 2x4's and get it going! Best, Chuck Leaf

It is my understanding that it's not as important to use all spanish cedar for the inside of a walk in humidor. After all you'll be leaving all the cigars in the boxes they come in. So with that said they are already in cedar. You can use a tropical mohagany of some sort to build the shelves and to line the walls. The key as you already know is the moisture absorption and holding qualities of the wood. This should help keep costs down a bit. Another avenue for humidification you can look into is a wine cellar temp/humidity unit. They are designed exactly for what you are building and they control the temp as well. I briefly did some research into the wine cellar units but I don't remember what it was that I found as ideal, nor do I remember prices.

Re: Building a walk in humidor
I built a walk-in humidor about 1 year ago and posted some pics here on this site (cigar live). I know you have lots of questions and lots of worries about what types of materials to use to store your special "buddies", but just consider the following...
1. make sure you can maintain an average 70/70 in your space/room no matter what 2. make sure you insulate well between your framing studs and wall covering/paneling 3. dont worry about cedar and all that stuff...I doubt if you could tell the difference any way from paneling and cedar unless you have been smoking for 100 years. Plus most cigar boxes have enough cedary anyway! 4. buy a fairly inexpensive reverse osmosis system to put distilled humidification into the room 5. install a farily good exhaust system just in case you decide to smoke in there. 6. now, the rest is up to you and your imagination....first thing...stop worrying! Cigars are very forgiving if you treat them right! You can contact me at chuckleaf123@yahoo.com for further info.....
