Walmart $7 Hygrometer

Was at the local Walmart today and decided to try out the cheap digital hygrometer for use in my cooler. I'm salt testing it right now. It's only been about 9 hours, but it's dead on at 75%. I am really impressed. let's hope it stays that way til tomorrow morning when I throw it in my cooler.

Been using that same Walmart hygro for over 2 years now and at $7 it is a good buy. If you are calibrating it using the salt method, I would say that you may get some inaccuracy. I first calibrated mine that way and for about a year, my cigars seemed more humid than the hygro represented. I picked up the Boveda calibrating kit, very inexpensive, and it fine tuned my readings and my cigars are smoking quite a bit better.

I picked up a $27 model there. The remote setup where I can leave a sensor in the cooler, and then read the display on my desk. I left it in my cooler for a day, with my previously calibrated unit-and found it was just a single degree off. I really need to order another remote, since the one display can take multiple readings! Then I can have one thing that I watch, and keep an eye on both boxes.

At Target, it would have cost me over $50 to get units with the same features.

That'll be a future investment for me. I'm interested in the Oregan wireless unit myself.

Here's a pic. The model I got is a Springfield Precise Temp. (sorry it's a little blurry. it's hard to get a good pic b/c i couldn't use the flash, its blinded the whole thing, and the sun wasn't quite up when i took the pic, so i didn't have any natural light to work with, but you get the idea).

Look at Stogie Review under humidors, how to build a coolidor and they show some mods to this unit that will help it display a more accurate reading. I use two of them but I checked them with a salt test and one was close and the other reads 3-4% high.
