Here is the Burl wood Walnut and the process in which the walnut is applied to the curved lid. Glue is applied to the substraight and the Walnut and placed back into the vacuum bag. (The last pic should be first)
One more thing, the tape you see holds the veneer together in order to book match the 2 pieces. |

Once it comes out of the bag it gets sanded to a 320 grit and trimmed on the table saw. Here's apic before and after a quick coat of Tung oil. I just noticed the first post shows how long ago I started posting. I hope there's room on that count to get to the end.
Maby I'll get lucky and get a bright idea award.:helloooo: |

Bill what an awesome look--I will be using Teak and White oak on mine. I am looking at bleaching the oak and wanted to see what your thought was on that?
The vacuum bag rig is a pretty cool device!

The pic is upside down but it looks like 2 people blowing smoke at each other.
As far as bleaching the oak goes, you won't have much luck with hosehold bleach. There's a special concentrated bleach just for wood work and it's very expensive. If you want a very blond wood you might try Maple or Holley. Myself, I have to stay away from some oak, I have an allergic reaction to it. It makes me itch. |

Thanks Chris. Wait until it has about 6 or 7 more coats. It'll really be popin' then. Tung oil adds a beautiful shine but still maintains the look of real wood. Takes about a week to apply all the coats though. The only way to do it right is to wait 24 hrs between coats.
