Why you should listen to your BOTL
Although I have smoked cigars very occassionally in the past, like once or twice a month, I have recently developed more of a taste for them, and have stepped up to a few times a week. I used to just buy a stick or two and they would be smoked shortly thereafter, but now the need to load up a few and store them has arrived.
Last week I dutifully placed 5 cigars in the small travel humdor I had recieved from a longtime friend and BOTL who had an extra. I put in some beads, charged appropriately with distilled water and thought I was good to go. A few days later, I came accross a hygrometer that had been recommended to me and I bought it and dropped it in the humi. You can imagine my terror when after a full 24 hours it read 45%. :arghhhh: I ran to CL for help, read the newbie advice posts for about an hour, and now, about a day after SEASONING my humi, I am looking at a steady 73%. I suspect it shall drop a bit lower within another day. Bottom line: If you don't want to dry out that $12 stick you just bought, READ and LEARN young paduan. Thank you to all who post thier advice, instruction and experience here. In case you had any doubts, it is being put to good use by the inexperienced like myself. |

Yep. We all learn by our mistakes. Some mistakes are more costly than others....

Some may say it's a tiny bit on the low side. It's like a science project. You have to see what works for you. ie. cc's are suppose to be kept around 65% for a better smoke.(subjective) Some smoke better closer to 70%. That's the fun part of this hobby. I think the main thing is consistency. Whatever works for you, keep it constant. You'll probably have several humi's at different RH levels for this reason.
