Humi problem.

Ok so I've had this 150 count ceder humi sense I started smoking cigars but I stop using it because it started smelling funny. I didn't think anything of it at the time, I just stop using it. But not to long ago I was checking out my humi and I found out that the foam was giving off that smell, its become quit strong. So I took those out and started airing it out. So does anyone know how to get rid of smells inside humi's? I don't think airing it out will be enough. Or is it to late....

Wow that really $ucks. Have you done a really good visual inspection of the humi? Hate to even mention it but look for mold. There's a really good chance that's the smell you're getting. Need to seek advise from the FOG's here.:support:

I just search threw it and I didn't find anything. Maybe there was some on the foam but nothing in the humi. I also have another question. Is it possible for a humidor to absorb the smell from a room if the seal is not that tight?

Did you use regular tap water in the foam block? If you used that instead of distilled water you may have bacterial growth, and that could be the source of the odor.

I'd probably do 4 things:

1. Let the box sit open to air out.
2. Re-season it using distilled water.
3. Replace the foam with beads dampened with distilled water.
4. Then put a few of my least favorite/cheapest cigars in it to absorb whatever odors are left. You could also use a dish of baking soda for this last step.

Just what I would do, hope you get it figured out.

Even if you use distilled water the mold and bacteria can still get in there. What flathead59 said would be the correct way to go IMHO. Be sure the humi get's completely dried out. I would let it sit open for a couple weeks at least. Beads are best, but, if you must use a sponge type system then re-season it with 50/50 solution. That will help keep any mold from coming back.
