Question What type of wood is this?

nsure:

I acquired this small desktop humidor about 6 years ago. I've never used it until now; had it buried away. It's a Brebbia, but I cannot find anything on the Internet about Brebbia humidors, just their pipes. Maybe they discontinued making humidors....

It's solid wood, not laminate or veneer.

Yeah, it looks a lot like quilted maple to me. I've seen some quilted Bubinga that looks like it too, but my guess would be quilted maple.

I'd also guess it's a well constructed veneer. Saw it in half and let us know.

I do not think it's veneer.... I've looked it over very well and it's solid from head to foot.

It was $200.00 six years ago. It might hold 12 sticks, so it's not that big....

It's a beauty for sure, and don't think that veneer detracts from the value of finely crafted woodworking items. It does NOT.

Of course that could be a solid piece of quilted maple. Only reason I thought different is that the lid was framed by another wood which is the norm on a veneered piece. After all, I'm looking at a little picture, and you have it right there. What's the bottom of the lid look like? Did they cover that beautiful figure with cedar?

You have a gorgeous humidor, and I do think it is Quilted Maple.

Yes, the inside of the lid is cedar.

Is quilted maple considered an exotic wood?

It's grown here.

"Quilt or quilted maple is a type of maple in which the growth of the wood fibers is distorted, producing a beautiful wavy "quilted" look, often similar to ripples on water. This type of distortion is referred to as "figure" in the wood, and is not a distortion of the grain pattern itself as is commonly thought. Prized for its beauty, it is used frequently in the manufacturing of musical instruments. "

YES! Quilted Maple is fairly hard to come by and is VERY EXPEN$$$$IVE.

There is no such thing as a Quilted Maple Tree. It comes from the growth characteristics of the Big Leaf Maple and you never know what you got till it's milled and you find that treasure inside!

I agree, it does look more like quilted than a bird's eye piece, although the quilted stuff I have seems to have a bit broader pattern than the wood on David's box. His box has a tighter pattern.

Looks like either Quilted Maple or Tamo ash Burl. I'd lean towards Tamo Ash burl. You can go to www.veneersupplies.com and see just about everything under the sun. That's where I shop for veneers. Here's a link to a pic of ther Tamo.
