Exclamation Rate My Humidor Setup

So I just ordered my humidor set up.

I bought the Capri 25-50 cigar humidor from CheapHumidors.com.

To that I added the Boveda Seasoning Pack http://www.cheaphumidors.com/Merchan...de=humidifiers

And the Boveda Hygrometer Calibration Kit http://www.cheaphumidors.com/Merchan...de=hygrometers

For Humidification I bought the Heartfelt 1/2 ounce Humi Tube at 70% humidity. http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/Beads.htm

So for setup I will put the Seasoning Kit in the Humidor for 1-2 days and I will calibrate a Digital Hygrometer that I plan on buying from Wal-Mart or RadioShack.

I will then velcro my hygrometer to the inside of the humidor and check the Humidity.

Then add cigars.

Do you think the 1/2 ounce Humi Tube should take care of this Humidor's humidity needs? How long should it last?

I think it depends on where you put the humi. If you put it @ my house it would last longer then the cigars. Darn things keep disappearing @ an alarming rate!

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

That's a sweet little setup.......for a starter humi.

Not busting your chops or anything, but I think you'll find that the more time you spend here, the bigger humi you'll need. A couple of trades in the NST, and that thing will be at capacity (which is good for you). I predict another purchase in your near future.

The beads will definitely do you right, but you can season with distilled water and calibrate your hygro with table salt. I know the purchases are very tempting, but why waste money on gimmicks when you can put it towards cigars?

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

After reading what I wrote and reading your newb intro, I realize that I may have sounded like quite a dick. I apologize if that is the case and it definitely wasn't my intention.

I think that's a great humidor for a young guy just getting into the hobby and trying to get his feet wet.

Nice score, especially for the price.

Cheers!!
Steve

--EDIT-- And for sounding like a dick, just PM me an addy and I'll send you a nice little sampler to get started on filling that thing up.

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

Sounds like a nice setup. BUT.. you'll be buying another soon! ... I bought a 50 count from Thompson for my first humi. It lasted me a year. Then I found clubstogie. Within 4 months on clubstogie I had bought a 100ct glasstop, and now have both of them full! And I'm a broke college kid, no money for food, eat ramen noodles all the time, etc... Good luck on the slippery slope, and welcome to CS!

Thumbs up Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

nice!!
yes pay attention to those who have gone before you their houses are littered with the carcasses of humis that are too small...
I started seriously collecting and obsessing over cigars about 3 months ago now. I started the same way you did. small humidor is perfect for getting your feet wet and decideing if this is a pastime you wish to invest in. what somone suggested to me and so far has worked perfect is using my small tabletop (never in a million years before I joined CS did I think a humi with 50 capacity was "small" ) for my daily sticks and my coolerdor for the boxes I am buying.
so even if it ends up being too small (which it will if you dont throw your computer out the window and never come to these boards again ) then you can still find a use for it later on.

That setup should serve you well.

I've smoked on and off for years but have really only been collecting any smokes for a year now.

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

Nice way to start! Yeah, I just bought a 150 ct humidor. Not filled... yet! I know that in the not too distant future, I'll probably need something bigger. Just know that you are doing it right. A few friends just used old shoeboxes!

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your comments.

I feel better about my purchase now!

Hopefully it will last me for a good four to five months.

Yeah, I am a broke high school- soon to be college- student...but cigars won't be my priority purchases- and I don't plan on eating my way through college on ramen noodles! I am also into weightlifting so food is quite important.

Thanks again for the comments- and I will give you updates on how these products are working- hopefully all positive.

Re: Rate My Humidor Setup

Sounds like a great setup, bro. Just don't be afraid to add more beads. The more you have, the better the buffering capacity.

I'm going to repost here what I originally posted in this thread here: clicky

Quote:
I'd like to take a minute to respectfully disagree with my fellow BOTL's who believe that huge humidors are necessary.

A humidor is a convenient and aesthetic display PRESENTATION BOX used to "merchandise" a representative assortment of your cigars. Because it's out in the open, and residing with our other furniture, we invest more money to buy something aesthetically pleasing.

But a box is just a box. Why spend more money on fancy storage when you don't have to, when cheap large volume storage in the form of a coolerdor will do?

Case in point, a $600 Reed and Barton Biltmore humidor which stores 100 cigars means that this storage method equates to $6 per cigar. Contrast that with a $60 coolerdor that will store 600 cigars or more, translating to $.10 cents per cigar.

We can only smoke one cigar at a time, more or less. So, my belief is that the way to go is to store your INVENTORY in "backstock" in a coolerdor (just like they do in a retail store), moving only a handful of representative smokes to the expensive humidor for ease of access.

Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for multiple humidors is overkill, IMO. And, if you buy only ONE humidor, you can afford to concentrate more of your budget into one REALLY NICE one, rather than three or four mediocre ones.

Which brings me to what I did. I wanted a nice humidor of good reputation and construction quality. After shopping, I picked this bad boy up for $200 from an Ebay reseller. I figure that $200 for a $600 humidor is a good deal on any day.

Changed the hardware for $10, slapped in a digital hygrometer for $20 and some of David's beads, and I have a nice deal.

Sounds like a nice first setup. You will be buying a new one. I started with a 150 count, thinking I would have all the room in the world. Well, it is almost filled now.
