Re: Spanish Cedar

You could also try calling a couple local saw mills in your area. Sometimes they have it.

Try calling any local cabinetmakers in your area. On more than one occasion ive called around looking for shorts (less than 2 feet long) of various species of wood, and they practiaclly gave it to me.

If your not up to making a few calls, rockler is your best bet.

Re: Spanish Cedar

Go to www.woodfinder.com and do a search for spanish cedar. There are several places to find it on this site.

It ain't gonna be cheap if you're talking one of any great size. If you are talking of a large humidor/cabinet, you may want to consider veneer.

Re: Spanish Cedar

Looks like they carry "Selects and better" only.

All of thier prices are low. Makes me wonder what they consider Sel + Btr.

we plan on building a cabinet, and I was a little stumped on how to use the cedar, but the veneer sounds like a good idea. How thick to you think it should be?

Re: Spanish Cedar

If your talking actual veneer as in your going to glue it up yourself. It will probably be between 3/64" to 1/16" thick.

If your thinking veneer as in plywood or mdf you can get it in range of thickness. For a lining i would think that you would be fine using 1/4" plywood with cedar veneer.

Your best bet would be to get 3/4" spanish cedar plywood. Make the cabinet out of that and you shouldnt have to line it.

Re: Spanish Cedar

Be careful with Spanish Cedar dust, too, if doing your own cutting. Can't remember where I read this account, but the dust is very fine and caused this particular carpenter to get sick after inhaling it. Use a mask.

Some sources state that Spanish Cedar dust is carcinogenic. I do not know whether or not this is true. Err on the safe side.

That's a must around my father. He's an OSHA safety supervisor for a very large construction company and he's all about safety, lol.

Re: Spanish Cedar

Nasiar,

Depends on what they are calling selects. FAS (Firsts and Seconds) are top of the line boards. They are the optimal choice when using solid wood. Alot of comapnys out there tend to let some wood slide when grading. So basically one persons A grade could be someone elses B grade (and vise versa)

Knowing that Selects and Better is a B grade lumber i would be a little hesitant on buying it without seeing it, because in all actaullity it could be what i consider C grade lumber. But then again it could be what i consider an A grade lumber. What it comes down to is, its a gamble.

The grading all comes down to size of knots, checking (cracks), sapwood, and any other defects in the wood that would make it otherwise unapealing.

Its not as big deal if your cutting the cedar into strips to do a tounge and groove style lining, or something similiar that would cause you to cut the material down into smaller peices. When you do that you will be able to cut around the defects but this could cause alot of wasted lumber. It all comes down to what you plan to do, and what your capabilities are.
