Throw 'em out? Rewet them? Got questions, need answers.
I bought an 8# jug of the Exquisicat Pearl Fresh beads unscented of course for less than 14.00 at Petsmart. Used the same amount suggested for other beads in each size of humi. Been using the first batch in each of my humis for almost a year now and I have not had to change them yet. How long will they last I don't know but so far so good...

What happened to the edit function? I forgot to add that yes periodically I have to re wet them and I use a spray bottle with distilled h2o. You don't want to soak them just mist them and all is well...

I used silica cat litter for a couple years from about 05-07. It works pretty well. The only downside I have seen is that it takes more kitty litter than a comparable amount of beads and they crack open and break into smaller pieces, even with spraying, much more than the beads.

Thats my .02. I still think its worth investing in beads for a cabinet especially since they are pretty cheap these days.

Re: cat litter beads changed my life...

Although you may be having limited results with yours, many other people have tested kitty litter extensively and have found that they are very ineffective and inefficient.

Try this post from a member who did a lot of tests on various humidity medias.

Re: cat litter beads changed my life...

If you want a long term comment, I can help. I've used them for 3 years now. No issues at all. I use the clear kitty litter beads, unscented of course.

I trust all my high end sticks to them also. I heard a comment once that they cannot absorb moisture if the humidity gets too high. I haven't been able to confirm or disprove that. The only time my humidity spikes is when I add a box or 2 to the humidor and typically they go in a coolador first with a dedicated hygrometer and i open the lid frequently to check the humidity and allow it to drop slowly over a month.

I'm sure the chemists in here will explain why Heartfelt is better, and maybe it is, but in 3 years I have had no issues. Zero, zip, zilch. I currently have them in one huge stand alone humidor, 3 desk humidors, and a coolidor.

There may be better products out there, but for 3 years my humidity stands at 66%-67% and I have never had any issues.

I actually learned about them years ago on a Club Stogie thread. If you are ambitious you can still search it out I am sure.

If you have any questions about them, or how I use them, just send me a note.

Re: cat litter beads changed my life...

What is the intended use of cat litter? I don't think its for controlling humidity, but i have been wrong before. As such cat litter will never get near my cigars, i will just stick with my beads.

Interesting take... I bet you drink water from the tap and flush the toilet with the same water supply...

Many things have multiple unrelated uses.

Just a thought

Re: cat litter beads changed my life...

Nothing magical or mysterious, it's simple science. Although, it is wondrous the way it works.

It's all silca gel. Here is a link to a PDF that explains of bit of it's history, uses and how it works. It a good read if you are so inclined and great to skim for a few tid bits.

DEMYSTIFYING SILICA GEL
written by Steven Weintraub, you may give it a minute to load @ about 300K.

The way I understand it… the big difference between the high $$$ silica gel beads and the inexpensive silica gel beads involves the manufacturing process which relates to the size of the small pores (nano) that permeate the silica gel.

The size of the pores or holes in the silica gel determines the speed at which it is able to effectly regulate the RH of a given volume.

Something like that.
