cat litter beads changed my life...

ya all can dog it or scoff all you want. here are some facts

fact 1: its working perfect in my humidor
fact 2: silica beads are silica beads
fact 3: other members are reporting years of use with no problems
fact 4: its 1/4 the cost of regular beads let alone and oasis

so until facts come along to disprove this then i'll be sticking with the kitty litter.

Kitty litter has been used for several years by quite a few members on other boards. I'm surprised there is so much controversy over this.

I use adsorbent beads that are used for packing in crates. They are optimized for drawing moisture in but once they have equalized with the outside humidity they want to stay that way. If I notice the humidity in my humi start to drop I just put a wet puck type humidifier in there until it goes back up. I don't know what would work better as I haven't tried any other beads but this sure works better than a foam puck alone.

Do you have to condition the litter or is it already conditioned to 65%?

Sounds like a good idea. Here's another cost effective idea. I purchased floral water crystals like those used in the humi-jars and Drymastat products, and they too work perfectly. Depending on the size of your humidor, use 1 teaspoon of the crystals for about 8 ounces of distilled water, and 1 teaspoon of any humidifying solution, works perfectly. You can buy the crystals at the following link for about 8 bucks for a pound, I have a humidor that holds about 1000 sticks and I used a reuseable Glad plastic bowl (about 24 ounces) and my digital hygrometer is always in the 69-72 range. And the best part is I only have to maintain it about once every 6 months. Place An Order

well 69-72 is way too high for me to be happy with .

70 is acceptable, but i prefer 65. but at 72/73 and up you run the risk of beetles.


as far as seasoning the cat litter.... i just put mine in a platic container, and then sprayed them with distilled water until they were goo and clear.

Incorrect! High humidity can promote mold growth, but has nothing to do with beetle infestation. Beetle larvae can hatch at temperatures above 71-75degrees for a period of a few days.

Kitty litter will work to absorb excess humidity. But in low humidity areas you will have a problem with the beads releasing moisture. Unconditioned beads are not the same as Rh beads sold by Cigarmony or HeartfeltIndustries. Those beads have been conditioned to release and absorb to a specific set Rh.

or go to Lowes and buy a product called AgriSoak...charge them with a 50/50 h20 PG solution and then recharge as needed with water
