My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I finally broke down and bought a digital hygrometer and have been testing the "actual" RH in my 'dors and am now really getting pissed at how low my shitty 'dors keep the humidity.
I've got one 100-count glass top at 64%. It was painfully low at first, so I started out by giving her three jars of beads. The sticks were still dry, so I added a couple Boveda pouches. About a week ago I pulled a stick out to smoke and it was really dry, so I broke down and added a cup of plain distilled water in addition to everything else. Yesterday I finally checked the digital in there and it's at a whopping 64% RH, with all of that crap in there. What the hell?!?!?!?! Is this just the shittiest 'dor on the planet, or what? I am going nuts here. My poor sticks! I've got one 20-25 desktop 'dor that I keep full, I put two 75% Bovedas in there maybe a month ago...I checked the sticks last weekend and they're BONE DRY. I put a new digital hygro in there and the humidor is at a whopping 60% RH. The pouches all seem fine, too. They haven't crystallized or worn out or anything. I'm afraid to check my third 100-counter, although that one seems to be in okay shape as the sticks I get out of it always seem properly humidified. I seasoned each humidor in properly when I got it and have always kept them in use with at least one kind of humidification device going, but this is nuts! I am gonna lose it up here if I can't stabilize these suckers. Can anyone give me some pointers? A million thanks! |

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I use Heartfelt beads and keep my 150ct at around 64/65 RH and my sticks smoke great! This is subjective of course as some like it lower and some higher. My two coolers on the other hand I keep around 68 RH b/c it's mostly boxes. Get yourself a big cooler, it's not pretty but very effective, at least until you get the RH issue worked out. Good luck!

the root of the problem is the most likely the seal on your humidors. you can put a thin seal between the lid and bottom. the cooler is a great way of going also. is you go with the cooler, make sure you have enough beads. don't forget the cooler will pick up the ambient temperature. if your home gets warm (over) 80, consider a wine cabinet
good luck

Where are you? Dry winter air wreaks havoc on otherwise good humidors.

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I'll bet that's half your problem. It's tough to keep 'regular' humidors conditioned in the winter months. I bought a cooler and dropped the humidors inside it. I'll pull them back out again in a month or two when the RH goes back up.

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
Exactly. Don't know where you live but here in Wisconsin with the heating system in my house I can't keep a traditional humidor properly maintained in the winter. I've completely gone to a $50.00 120qt cooler now with 3/4 lb. 65% beads (all 3 of my traditional humidors are in retirement now). It's the only way to go in my situation and it works great!

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I agree with the coolidor. I have been checking my humidor and coolidor over the winter for humidity.
Both looked fine but yesterday when I did the pinch test on my sticks in the humidor, ouch the sticks were drier than the humidity level on the hygrometer showed. I moved most everything into my coolidor and find it is just easier to control the proper humidity levels. Now I have to go thru the slow rehydrating process. |

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I'm having a heck of a time keeping the humidity up on my humidor as well, dry winters suck! I've got some beads on the way, and finally going to set up my coolerdor! I should get that ready soon, got a bunch of cigars from Taboo and cbid to fit somewhere.

I guess coolerdor is the solution for me as well. Can I make a coolerdor and set my regular humidors inside it? It would have to be a big cooler... Last edited by Frinkiac7; 03-12-2009 at 07:23 PM.. |

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
I do not like the coolerdors for aethetic reasons. I bought some airtight food storage containers (nice tupperware) from Target for about $5 each. They hold about 4o sticks each. I put a Humicare pillow in them and they work awesome. I also take cigar prints and decorate the boxes. I put a cedar sheet from my cigar boxes in the bottom of each one. Totally works great.
Also, find some of the old candy jars with the flip lid, rubber gasket, and clasp. Or the candy jars with the rubber stopper on the lid. Both make great humidors and are very decorative. A puck from Cigarmony in the lid works excellent. Or in the ones with the stopper, poke small holes in the stopper and fill it with beads. You will never worry about your sticks again.

Re: My 'Dors Can't Hold Humidity For Crap!
Go to Walmart, they're cheap. I've got 2 100-ct humis ans a handful of boxes in mine. Think it's a 120qt that cost $40.
