Storage thoughts
Hello Everybody,
First off I have been a guest on this forum for the last 6 months reading every thread, soaking up info like a sponge. I have filled a 300 ct humidor and set up a 120qt coolidor beautifully. However I have about >$1500 of smokes arriving over the next couple weeks and am worried about my coolidor temperature for the summer. It has been in the 70's lately in CO and my apt/coolidor temperature has been maintaining 67-72 temp fluctuations. I think in the summer even though I have central air temps could hit 75-80 and posts on the cigar beetles have me freaked me out. On a positive note I maintain 70% humidity in both storage devices in arid CO, so newbies read the threads do your hw and don't be in a rush, everything done right takes time. So my question is: I am looking into winedors and am negotiating a sweet deal on a marvel industrial grade wine cooler. Don't have all the spec's but I know its a compressor cooler and I think its dual zone? I have seen with the right prep these models can maintain consistent temp/humidity. It is going to run me $300 for the cooler, do you guys think this is a bad idea? For that cost I can buy avanti, haier etc...however I haven't been super impressed with the build quality on these models and know the above will run a consistent temp. and have solid seals etc...is the money better spent on a thermoelectric model? I have 3 oust fans, 3 lbs of 70% beads so the only thing I would really need to invest in is a johnson A419...no biggie. I also saw a couple post on the freezeridors and these intrigued me due to their size/cost ratio, once again compression but with a johnson regulator on it, it would barley ever run. Any one have any experience converting a freezer? I would love to do that as it would be an aging storage unit. What are your thoughts, basically my budget is $400? Thanks in advance. Re: Storage thoughts
Beetle outbreaks are actually pretty rare (I've rotated several thousand cigars through my humidors in the past 8-9 years & have seen hatched larva about 4 times).
You might want to back the humidity off to about 65 rh (but ultimately, it's what you like that counts). Your cigars & your palate may thank you. Sounds like a nice setup though, so what the heck...

Re: Storage thoughts
After stumbling across this design, I think the deal has been sealed. I'm going to opt for a freezerdor using a freezer chest. I'm still open to suggestions but this seems like the best storage option when aesthetics/space is not a factor. I'll post the setup pictures.
Here is the design I will follow from the freezer photos in his fun stuff section: Fred's homepage |
